Celebrity Mercury Alaska: Vancouver, Ketchikan, Juneau, & Sitka June 29-July 6, 2003
by Thomas J. Wong
This was the first cruise for myself, my wife and two children. Cruise was to Alaska beginning from Vancouver. Following are our comments:
- We loved the ship -- the services were excellent.
- Only comments is when boarding at Canada Place. The mass of humanity can be overwhelming when you have small children. There are so many forms to be filled out. Suggest you bring a writing board to be able to write since it is difficult to do so with your carryon luggage and other matters.
- We arrived at about 1:30 and did not board until 4:00. Once on board there is the mandatory emergency drill (wearing life vests) then if you have the main dinner (6:00) off to dinner.
- Found the food to be quite good and somewhat overwhelming. After the third or fourth day, you kind of just wish there is just a "peanut butter" sandwich.
- The cruise went to Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka and back to Vancouver. Quite frankly all the stops seem to be one big tourist trap.
- I am prone to seasickness but did not use the patch. Found the ship to be quite stable.
- Celebrity does not add on the tips to your account and it is up to you to tip. They have suggested tipping schedule but quite frankly I do not believe most people follow it. Biggest complaint again is the envelope to tip the head housekeeper and assistant Maitre D' -- not sure why you have to do this.
