Carnival Expands Seat-Saving Initiative Fleetwide

Following a highly successful pilot program on Carnival Breeze, Carnival Cruise Lines has begun a fleetwide rollout of a new system designed to ensure that all guests are able to enjoy equal access to sun loungers by preventing seat saving in outdoor deck areas.

Under the new system, shipboard team members monitor sun lounge usage and if they observe a seat that contains a towel or personal belongings but appears to be unoccupied, a notification is placed on the chair indicating the current time. If the chair remains unoccupied for 40 minutes, the contents are removed and held for the guest’s safekeeping.

The expanded policy is scheduled to be introduced on a gradual basis over the next couple of weeks, with fleetwide implementation on all 24 Carnival ships expected by mid-September. Guests will be advised of the new system via public address announcements by the cruise director, signage in outdoor deck areas, messages displayed on the Seaside Theater poolside LED screen, as well as notices in “Fun Times,” the daily shipboard newsletter.

Seabourn Adds Seventh Continent On 'Ultimate Antarctica & Patagonia' Voyages

SEATTLE, Aug. 31: More than twenty years after the company pioneered an entirely new style of small-ship, ultra-luxury cruising, Seabourn plans to extend its repertoire of highly desirable cruising destinations to include Antarctica for the first time in 2013. Seabourn Quest, the newest ship in Seabourn's award-winning fleet, will begin a series of four 21- to 24-day voyages sailing between Valparaiso, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina starting in November of 2013.

"Seabourn is already renowned for our extensive portfolio of worldwide itineraries," noted Seabourn's president Richard Meadows. "Antarctica was the only continent that Seabourn did not feature in our itineraries. This expands our global reach to all seven continents and builds on our already impressive list of exotic destinations. Seabourn is very proud to be bringing our highly rated ultra-luxury cruise experience to Antarctica."

The all-suite ship will cruise the Chilean coast, including visits to Puerto Montt for the Chilean Lakes District, Castro on the huge island of Chiloe, and Puerto Chacabuco, from where guests can tour the magnificent Torres del Paine National Park. Then the intimate ship will thread the glaciers, peaks and channels of the Chilean Fjords, culminating in a transit of the Beagle Channel and its spectacular Glacier Alley. Weather permitting, following a call at Ushuaia in Argentina's Tierra del Fuego, Seabourn Quest will cruise by Cape Horn bound for the Southern Ocean. Guests on board will experience five days in Antarctica, including scenic cruising of highlights such as the breathtaking Lemaire Channel, picturesque Paradise Bay and the Gerlache Strait. An experienced Antarctic expedition staff will ensure that guests enjoy the best of the numerous available sites for landings and cruising in smaller inflatable boats, based on real-time weather and wildlife reports during their Antarctic adventures. Scientists, naturalists and other lecturers in a number of disciplines will speak on board and accompany guests ashore to add insights to their once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

During the South Atlantic portion of the voyage, guests will enjoy visits to Port Stanley, in the Falkland Islands, and Montevideo, Uruguay's capital, en route to or from Buenos Aires.

A 24-day Holiday version will include two days exploring the sub-Antarctic wildlife Eden of South Georgia Island, renowned for its beauty and its vast, teeming rookeries of king penguins and other seabirds, as well as breeding elephant and fur seals.

Seabourn's new Ultimate Antarctica & Patagonia sailings open for sale on Tuesday September 4, 2012 for sailing beginning in November of 2013.

New Evidence Proves Princess Cruises Did Not Fail to Rescue
Adrift Fishermen as Alleged

Santa Clarita, CA, Aug 30: Princess Cruises has released recently discovered video footage of a rescue at sea of a small boat adrift for nearly a month in the Pacific Ocean that conclusively confirms the adrift boat, the Fifty Cent, was not the small boat spotted and photographed by three Princess passengers several weeks earlier. The story, which broke last April, received extensive press coverage with Princess and the ship’s captain widely criticized for not coming to the rescue of the men onboard, two of whom subsequently died.

Princess has been sued six times by the survivor and relatives of fishermen on the adrift boat. The lawsuits claim the cruise ship Star Princess passed within several miles of the Fifty Cent, but failed to rescue them despite three cruise ship passengers spotting them and reporting they saw a boat that might be in distress. The ship’s bridge staff did not see signs of distress and therefore did not stop or notify the ship’s captain.

The Princess passengers, a group of bird watchers with sophisticated telescopic camera equipment, photographed the small boat they had spotted. Their photos depict a small white boat similar to Panga boats used by local fishermen in Central America. In contrast, the video footage of the Fifty Cent’s rescue shows a markedly different boat.

Princess had the newly discovered video and the original bird watchers’ photos analyzed by Michael Snyder, a retired photo analyst and photogrammetry expert from NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Mr. Snyder concluded that “the small boat photographed by the passengers onboard Star Princess is clearly not the small boat called Fifty Cent that Adrian Vasquez was found adrift on.”

Princess began searching for photographs or video of the Fifty Cent after hearing recorded statements by plaintiff Adrian Vasquez that were inconsistent with his allegation that Star Princess had passed him by, and which were also inconsistent with the bird watchers’ reported sighting. The captain of the fishing boat that rescued Vasquez has provided a sworn statement confirming that Vasquez gave a detailed account of his ordeal at the time he was rescued, but never mentioned any cruise ship passing him by.

Further supporting the fact that Star Princess did not cross paths with the Fifty Cent is a drift analysis which charted the movement of the two vessels taking into account ocean current, wind and wave data. Conducted by Weather Routing, Inc., a private meteorological consulting firm, the analysis concluded "that it is not likely the boat sighted by the guest passengers was the same boat rescued on March 23rd and identified as the Fifty Cent."

“While this remains a tragic story, we are gratified to have scientific confirmation that Star Princess was never in the vicinity of the adrift boat and that the boat photographed by our passengers was not the adrift Fifty Cent,” said Alan Buckelew, president and CEO of Princess Cruises. “Nevertheless, we have used this as a valuable learning opportunity and have strengthened our bridge reporting procedures to ensure that all messages of concern from passengers or crew are carefully evaluated by our senior bridge officers.”

According to Princess, the ship’s captain, Edward Perrin, had been devastated by allegations his ship might have ignored a vessel in distress. Ironically, Captain Perrin was praised last month by Canadian authorities after his ship diverted to act as a wind block assisting Canadian authorities in a dramatic helicopter rescue of two sailors from a boat that was floundering in stormy conditions off the coast of British Columbia. Princess ships have come to the aid of persons or ships in distress more than 30 times in the past decade and it is fairly common for Princess ships to divert to render aid when they receive distress calls.

Princess Cruises has demanded the lawsuits be immediately dismissed and has offered to waive its right to seek recovery of legal costs, citing sympathy for the victims of the Fifty Cent’s ordeal. Video footage of Adrian Vasquez aboard the fishing boat that rescued him, and his boat Fifty Cent can be found here and  a graphic comparing the Fifty Cent and the boat photographed by Princess passengers can be found here.

Carnival Cruise Lines Celebrates National Cherry Popsicle Day with
Special Gift to Kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®

August 26 was National Cherry Popsicle Day and, in recognition of this annual event, Carnival Cruise Lines provided a delicious treat of 500 cherry popsicles, along with fun popsicle-shaped balloons, to the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the cruise line’s top charitable partners.

The kids truly enjoyed the tasty frozen confections and, as an added treat, all of the names of Carnival’s Facebook fans who “liked” the company’s post about the National Cherry Popsicle/St. Jude project were added to a card that will be given to the hospital.

The National Cherry Popsicle Day celebration at St. Jude was part of Carnival’s ongoing support of the organization, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Carnival’s support of St. Jude includes a series of fun, interactive shipboard fundraisers and the company’s goal is to raise $3 million over a three-year period.

Princess Cruises Offers New Small-Ship Caribbean Sailing Opportunity

SANTA CLARITA, CA, Aug 30: Princess Cruises has  announced a unique new Caribbean cruise opportunity for travelers looking to get away from the cold January weather. Featuring the intimate cruise experience of its small ship Pacific Princess, this 10-day sailing features the line’s only calls at the boutique ports of Tortola and St. Barthelemy in 2013. Sailing from January 17-27, this Eastern Caribbean voyage also offers full-day calls in Antigua, St. Lucia and St. Kitts, which features a late evening departure for more time on the island.

“Because Pacific Princess travels the globe, we rarely have the opportunity to offer a Caribbean cruise on this popular small ship,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “But because we’re rescheduling the ship’s drydock, we now have a wonderful chance to offer this unique one-time itinerary option before she takes off on her yearly world cruise.”

Among the in-port opportunities for passengers on this sailing are tours to Virgin Gorda from Tortola to see the famous geologic formation "The Baths," as well as the chance to visit UNESCO World Heritage sites of Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park on St. Kitts and the dramatic Pitons in St. Lucia.

Passengers will enjoy an intimate cruise experience aboard small ship Pacific Princess. Carrying just 680 passengers, the ship offers a rich selection of amenities, including specialty restaurants Sabatini’s and Sterling Steakhouse. Additional information about Princess Cruises is available through a professional travel agent, by calling 1-800-PRINCESS, or by visiting the company's website at princess.com.

Princess Cruises Announces Name of Next New Ship Will Be Regal Princess

SANTA CLARITA, CA, August 28: Princess Cruises today marked the beginning of construction of the second of its new generation of ships with the official keel laying ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. At the same time the line announced that the ship’s name will be Regal Princess. The vessel, a sister ship to Royal Princess, will debut in Spring 2014. The company and shipyard officials started the countdown to the ship’s launch today as the keel, the bottommost part of the ship, was ceremoniously lowered into position in the building dock.

“Just as Royal Princess was named after one of our iconic early vessels, Regal Princess also takes a name from our past that we think is well suited for this spectacular ship,” said Alan Buckelew, president and CEO of Princess Cruises. “Today’s keel laying is an exciting event as it marks a key milestone in our newbuilding program.”

Following a traditional blessing by a priest, the ship’s keel, which weighs approximately 500 tons, was moved into position by a huge crane onto the keel blocks. The computer-guided maneuver took only minutes, belying the more than 2 million man hours that will ultimately go into building the vessel. The 3,600-passenger, 141,000-ton ship will remain in the building dock until its float-out next summer.

Regal Princess will offer many of the same special features as Royal Princess, which debuts in June 2013. Among these are a greatly expanded atrium, the social hub of the ship; a dramatic over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway extending more than 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel; plush private poolside cabanas that appear to be floating on the water; the new Princess Live! television studio; a pastry shop; a special Chef’s Table Lumiere, a private dining experience that surrounds diners in a curtain of light; and balconies on all outside staterooms. More information and video previews of Royal Princess are available at www.princess.com/royalprincess.

Additional details including schedules and itineraries for Regal Princess will be announced next year. Additional information about Princess Cruises is available through a professional travel agent, by calling 1-800-PRINCESS, or by visiting the company's website at princess.com.

American Safari Cruises Introduces Heritage Adventure Cruises in 2013

Seattle, WA, August 21: Joining the yacht fleet in summer 2013, the 88-guest Safari Legacy adds a new style of adventure to InnerSea Discoveries/American Safari Cruises un-cruise lineup. Heritage Adventures in Alaska and along the Columbia and Snake Rivers bring history to life with an innovative Living History program on board and ashore. After significant renovations and upgrades, the replica Victorian steamer will sail two 11-night cruises between Seattle and Juneau, AK departing Aug 11 and Aug 22, 2013. In fall and spring, the Safari Legacy will sail weeklong cruises on the Columbia and Snake Rivers roundtrip Portland, OR. In summer 2014, it returns to Alaska for a full season of weeklong cruises between Juneau and Ketchikan, AK.

“In both destinations, historical characters and stories come to life in unexpected ways,” said Tim Jacox, executive vice president of sales and marketing. “You may meet naturalist John Muir on the bow of the boat in Alaska or Meriwether Lewis along the river.”

The Heritage Adventure program aboard each sailing combines on board presentations with tours ashore—all coordinated by on board Legacy Leaders who retrace history along the gold rush trail in Alaska or Lewis and Clark’s expedition along the rivers. Stories and characters from the past are brought to life through educational presentations, expert guest speakers and character reenactments. In contrast to the line’s luxury and active adventures which tend to forgo port calls for maximum time in the wilderness, the Safari Legacy calls on historic ports along the route and includes a tour in each town. Guided visits to museums and historical sites provide another view into the past and a chance to visit with local people and historians.

Gold Rush Legacy
Two 11-night Gold Rush Legacy sailings between Seattle and Juneau (and reverse) kick off the Safari Legacy’s inaugural year. The August 11 and August 22 cruises visit San Juan Islands and Friday Harbor, WA; Canada’s Inside Passage; Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Frederick Sound, Sitka, Icy Strait, Glacier Bay National Park, Haines and Skagway, AK.

Highlights include guided tours in port, whale watching, viewing glaciers in Glacier Bay, discovering native Tlingit culture and exploring scenic waterways by Victorian-style steamer. Legacy Leaders weave the colorful stories from Alaska’s history and the gold rush into activities throughout the voyage. Rates start at US$7,895 per person, double occupancy.

Legacy of Discovery
From September through November and March through May, weeklong Legacy of Discovery cruises depart roundtrip Portland, OR to explore the history and scenery of the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Areas visited include the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Richland, Hells Canyon, Walla Walla, Washington Wine Country, The Dalles and Astoria.

Highlights include scenic cruising through the Gorge; a visit to Multnomah Falls; transiting eight sets of locks and tour of the Bonneville Dam Visitor Center; jet boat into Hells Canyon; Fort Clatsop; Fort Walla Walla; downtown Walla Walla or Whitman Mission; Columbia Maritime Museum in Astoria; Maryhill Museum and Columbia Gorge Discovery Center; and a private wine tasting at a Washington winery. Rates start at US$3,195 per person, double occupancy.

The renovated boat emulates an early Victorian style steamer with carved wooden cabinetry, period décor and old world charm—perfect for a voyage down the Rivers or retracing the voyage of gold rush pioneers. All staterooms feature outside view windows, flatscreen TV/DVDs and an iPod docking station. Safari Legacy cruises include entry fees to museums, national parks and preserves, all onboard meals, fine wine, premium spirits and microbrews, and a complimentary massage. The vessel features a hot tub, sauna, fitness equipment and yoga classes. A guest to crew ratio of 2.5-1 ensures personalized service. Public areas include a Salon with dance floor, dining room with adjoining wine bar, a DVD and book library, open bridge and covered sun deck. An elevator provides access to three public decks. Cruise rates include transfers and all activities except optional excursions. Royal Princess “Float Out” Celebrated With Tie-in to the Past

SANTA CLARITA, CA, August 17: Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Royal Princess, reached a significant construction milestone yesterday when the vessel was “floated out” at its building dock at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. A traditional ceremony marked the occasion, which was highlighted by a participant with a unique tie to the ship and the unveiling of a special ship’s bell. Princess President and CEO Alan Buckelew and Royal Princess Captain Tony Draper attended the event, as did long-time Princess master Captain Nick Nash and his daughter, Victoria, who served as the ship’s “madrina” (or “godmother”).

Following the Italian shipyard’s tradition, the float out of a ship is celebrated when the madrina cuts the cord that begins the flow of water into the ship’s dock. Victoria Nash was chosen to serve as madrina because she has a special connection to the first Royal Princess. As a baby, she was christened aboard the ship.

“The original Royal Princess left our fleet some time ago, but we wanted to bring the spirit of that much-loved ship, also a prototype design, to the new Royal Princess,” said Buckelew during the ceremony. “And who better to do that than Victoria, who has grown up into a beautiful young lady who will now have a special connection with both vessels.”

As is tradition, the ship’s bell was used as her christening bowl during that ceremony in 1996, and Victoria’s name was subsequently engraved inside the bell to commemorate the occasion. Thanks to the Nash family, this same bell will be aboard the new Royal Princess.

“Captain Nash was presented with the ship’s bell from our original Royal Princess following its decommissioning, and we are delighted that he has very generously offered this bell to be placed aboard our new Royal Princess, in honor of his daughter,” said Buckelew. “Thank you Nick, for this wonderful gift.”

The two-day float-out process involves slowly letting water into the building dock to set the vessel afloat. The ship is then moved to the outfitting dock where final construction and interior outfitting will take place until the ship debuts in June 2013.

The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess is a new-generation ship currently under construction for Princess Cruises. Among the special features found on board will be a greatly expanded atrium, the social hub of the ship; a dramatic over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway extending more than 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel; plush private poolside cabanas that appear to be floating on the water; the new Princess Live! television studio; a pastry shop; a special Chef’s Table Lumiere, a private dining experience that surrounds diners in a curtain of light; and balconies on all outside staterooms. The ship’s 2013 maiden season will include cruises on the line’s signature Grand Mediterranean itinerary throughout the summer, followed by Eastern Caribbean cruises beginning in the fall. More information and video previews of the ship are available at princess.com.

Celebrity Cruises’ New Celebrity Reflection Presents Circuit Of Sensory Experiences In Exotic AquaSpa

MIAMI, August 16: Some like it hot, some like it cold, and they’ll all find enticing experiences in the exotic AquaSpa on Celebrity Cruises’ new Celebrity Reflection. The epitome of modern luxury, Celebrity Reflection will present an enhanced AquaSpa by Elemis allowing guests to create their own circuit of sensory experiences as they move from room to room and experience hot and cold, wet and dry, and peace and tranquility throughout.

The AquaSpa’s expanded, 883-square-foot Persian Garden will allow for six more in-demand curved, heated tile beds (15 total) with soothing sea views, and six entirely new experiences:

• The Hammam: A modern twist on a traditional experience, the Hammam is a cool, calm and quiet space designed to loosen muscles and joints while relaxing on a heated stone slab. The relaxing, regenerating experience can be enhanced with a massage or a soothing, custom salt scrub.
Infrared Sauna: Infrared heat offers distinct advantages over traditional steam heat saunas, as it provides many of the health benefits of natural sunlight without the dangerous effects of solar radiation. The heat within the infrared sauna penetrates deep into guests’ joints and surrounding tissue to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation and decrease pain versus purely heat the skin, as in a traditional sauna.
Aromatic Steam Room: Warm steam and aromatherapy combine to melt away muscle tension and toxins, and to relax the mind, and leave the entire body feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.
The Cold Room: Guests can ‘chill out’ completely in this space, whose seats, walls and floor are icy cold (52 F). The room is designed to tighten pores that were opened and cleansed previously in the infrared sauna and aromatic steam room.
DIY Scrub and Salt Bar: This new do-it-yourself bar allows guests to create custom “body cocktails,” or scrubs, from an array of salts, sugar and herbs. The scrubs can be purchased individually, or as a package of five scrubs for $45.
Sensory Showers: Guests can complete their journey through the Persian Garden by selecting either warm, tropical rain infused with mild, fruity fragrances, or an arctic cold mist enlivened with eucalyptus essences. Creative applications of soothing sound, scent and light will further tantalize the senses to leave guests invigorated and refreshed.

The Persian Garden experience will be complimentary for guests booked in Celebrity’s spa-inspired AquaClass accommodations. All other guests will be asked to pay $35 for a one-day pass. Additionally, the AquaSpa will introduce “Girlz Night,” a social spa night for women, complete with access to the Persian Garden, and “Couples Night,” offering couples an intimate evening in the Persian Garden. Celebrity Reflection’s AquaSpa also will add to the extensive menu of treatments a new therapy, “Rhythm and Bliss,” a rhythmic rubdown conceived and choreographed by the New York brand, bliss®, designed to give guests’ tense spots a ‘tune-up,’ while they ‘tune out’ with noise-canceling headphones playing their choice from four music mixes: classical, world, electronic and rock.

Consistent with its focus on wellness and life balance, the AquaSpa on Celebrity Reflection will offer “Acupuncture: The Point of Well-Being,” an integrated solution for chronic symptoms ranging from severe muscle and joint pain to insomnia, in addition to Botox® and Dysport® injectables, and Restylane® and Perlane® dermal fillers. The salon within the AquaSpa on Celebrity Reflection also will present a new service, introducing the popular Keratin Complex hair smoothing therapy.

Celebrity Cruises is so rejuvenated about the modern luxury enhancements debuting in Celebrity Reflection’s AquaSpa, it is today launching “The Art of Relaxation” sweepstakes, allowing a winner and guest to experience all the spa and ship have to offer. The grand prize is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean getaway cruise for two in AquaClass Suite accommodations on Celebrity Reflection, complete with round-trip coach-class air for two, and ground transportation from airport to port and the reverse. Located near the Stingray Encounter in Bertram’s Cove, the Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure is the first private island snorkel trail to depict an actual legend as it portrays the tale of a shipwreck. As the legend goes, “The Fancy,” sailing from Nassau, Bahamas in 1696, encountered a mythical creature named Lusca that was half-shark, half-octopus. It is believed that Lusca was responsible for the ship disappearing near the Berry Islands, the location of Great Stirrup Cay. Guests can explore discover and look for clues underwater that lead to the treasure that the Fancy was carrying, highlighted by 17 different underwater scenes that depict the shipwreck and Lusca’s legend, including cannons, a sunken piano, treasure chests, swords and more.

Developed in conjunction with IDEA Inc., an Orlando-based company with experience in developing theme park experiences, the Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure features some authentic artifacts that are more than 300 years old. In addition, all of the artifacts are eco-friendly and will stimulate additional marine life in the area. To experience the snorkel trail, guests can rent snorkel equipment at a rate of $29 per adult or $15 per child for the entire day. Guests wishing to experience both the Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure and the Stingray Encounter during their time on the island can purchase a combination package that includes both tours at a discounted price of $49 per adult, a $9 savings, and $29 per child, a $5 savings.

Norwegian has also partnered with the popular spirits brand, Patron, to introduce a new island bar experience to Great Stirrup Cay called, Lighthouse Beach Bar presented by Patron. This is the first private island bar that Patron has sponsored. It will feature Patron products, as well as a full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The bar will be completely redesigned and will be outfitted with beach-inspired décor, Patron branded materials, including bar stools, umbrellas and menu boards, as well as two large flat-screen TVs that will showcase a variety of entertainment from music videos to sporting events. The new bar is set to open in September 2012.

Norwegian was the first cruise line to offer an uninhabited tropical island experience exclusively for its guests. Great Stirrup Cay offers magnificent white sand beaches, majestic palms and calm, pristine waters where an abundance of colorful marine life inhabits the surrounding coral reefs. Additional activities on the island include a Waverunner® tour; a large Hippo Waterslide; eco boat tour; kayaking; parasailing; shopping at the straw market; and more.

Norwegian Celebrates Continued Success of "Undercover Boss" Episode
with "The Boss is Back" Promotion

MIAMI, August 15: In celebration of the continued re-airing of Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Undercover Boss” episode featuring CEO Kevin Sheehan, the company is showing its appreciation to the more than 35 million viewers who have watched the episode’s two airings on the CBS Television Network. More recently, the Norwegian episode has aired on The Learning Channel (TLC) and the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and will re-air on TLC this Saturday, August 18 at 8 and 11 pm EST. The show has also aired in dozens of countries around the world, providing for a global audience. “I learned so much during my Undercover experience. Even now, more than a year later, I continue to be humbled and appreciative of how our crew makes every day memorable for our guests,” said Sheehan. “I’ve also continued my Undercover journey by making a point of visiting all of our ships on a regular basis.”

Just this year, Sheehan has visited nine of Norwegian’s 11 ships and has personally met thousands of crew members and guests. The company is expanding bandwidth for crew, along with lowering telephone and internet rates, making it easier and more affordable for crew to keep in touch with their families.

“My mission since filming “Undercover Boss” has been to listen to our crew and make adjustments to ensure that they have the appropriate tools to do their jobs, feel appreciated and, very importantly, can keep in touch with their families and friends while onboard.”

The episode originally aired in 2011 on the CBS Television Network and featured Sheehan who finds himself in uncharted territory aboard both Norwegian Epic and Pride of America when he's asked to lead nearly 1,000 party-goers in a line dance, and is later forced to reveal his true identity after being recognized by a crew member.

“Every time the episode airs, I receive a flood of emails from guests who tell me how much they loved the episode and how much they are looking forward to cruising with us,” added Sheehan.

In addition, Sheehan will take questions via Twitter during the dates of the promotion. From today through August 19, tweet questions or comments to @CruiseNorwegian using the hashtag #TheBossisBack and look for responses from Sheehan.

American Queen Steamboat Company Revives River Traditions with Old Fashioned Holidays Voyages

MEMPHIS, TN, August 14: ‘Tis the season to be jolly “steamboat style” in December 2012. The American Queen Steamboat Company is stuffing stockings with lasting memories by introducing Cajun and Creole Christmas traditions onboard. Five Old Fashioned Holidays voyages on the American Queen are available from New Orleans roundtrip or between New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn. These itineraries offer guests authentic holiday experiences including the old Louisiana tradition of bonfires on the levees, special Christmas shows in the Grand Saloon, door-decorating contests and even a visit from Santa Claus and his elves. Seasonal culinary delights and decadent desserts including a Creole Réveillon Christmas Dinner, prepared by Culinary Director Regina Charboneau and her team, are among the many tasty highlights.

“This December guests on the American Queen will be immersed in holiday traditions celebrated by generations in the Lower Mississippi River region,” explains American Queen Steamboat Company CEO Jeffrey D. Krida. “Our Culinary Director Regina Charboneau will share both her own experiences and those traditions she has extensively researched for historical authenticity.”

The 7-night Old Fashioned Holidays voyages depart from Memphis, Tenn. to New Orleans on Dec. 1 and Dec. 21. A voyage upriver is also available from New Orleans to Memphis, Tenn. on Dec. 20 with all itineraries calling on Vicksburg, Miss.; Natchez, Miss.; St. Francisville, La.; Baton Rouge, La.; and Oak Alley, La.
A 5-night New Orleans roundtrip Old Fashioned Holidays voyage departs Dec. 8 featuring the ports of Oak Alley, La.; St. Francisville, La.; Natchez, Miss.; and Baton Rouge, La.
A 7-night New Orleans roundtrip Old Fashioned Holidays voyage embarks December 13 calling on Oak Alley, La.; St. Francisville, La.; Natchez, Miss.; Vicksburg, Miss.; Baton Rouge, La.; and Houmas House, La.

“I am delighted to be introducing the Creole Réveillon experience for our guests onboard to enjoy the holiday recipes passed on from my great Aunt Nan Marie,” this is a first glance at recipes from her new book “Mississippi Current” shares the line’s Culinary Director Regina Charboneau. “The beauty of the Réveillon is that it awakens the senses with food and celebrates the joys of Christmas and the New Year.”

A typical Réveillon menu served in homes along the Mississippi River or the fine restaurants of New Orleans’ French Quarter included Daube glace or veal grillades, egg dishes, breads, puddings and often included turtle soup and oysters. Naturally there was always an abundance of wines, cordials and fortified drinks. Eventually this tradition slowly began to disappear like many classic holiday traditions on the river. As the Réveillon is revived on the American Queen steamboat, Chef Charboneau’s menu will include Sazerac and Champagne Cocktails, Tomato Aspic with Fried Oysters, Deviled Eggs with Lump Crabmeat and Caviar, Pheasant Gumbo, Pork Grillades over Savory Grits, Almond Tarts and Bouche Noel.

All journeys include a one-night pre-voyage hotel stay, all shore tours onboard deluxe SteamcoachesSM in all ports, complimentary wine and beer with dinner and a host of other amenities. Princess Cruises Reveals the Ultimate in Relaxation Aboard Royal Princess

SANTA CLARITA, CA: In anticipation of National Relaxation Day next week, Princess Cruises has unveiled details of the expanded Lotus Spa that will offer the ultimate in rejuvenation for passengers cruising aboard the new Royal Princess, including a new location just off the atrium, a convenient stop for passengers enjoying a treatment before or after the many activities and dining options nearby. When the ship debuts next June, cruisers will find a spa with a welcoming feel and contemporary, sophisticated décor, as well as more treatment rooms than any other Princess spa. New features will include private Couples Villas and The Enclave, a thermal suite that is triple the size of any existing Lotus Spa. Here passengers will be able to totally decompress with new relaxing options such as the Hammam (a Turkish-style steam room), the Caldarium (an herbal steam room), the Laconium (a dry heat sauna) and the line’s first-ever hydro-therapy pool.

“The opportunity for total relaxation is one of the key reasons to cruise with Princess,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “So naturally, our signature spa is a popular place for passengers to escape from any stress and tension. With the new Lotus Spa aboard Royal Princess, we’re excited to give our passengers the ultimate place to unwind.”

Among the features of the Lotus Spa on Royal Princess will be:

The Enclave – The central feature of Princess’ largest-ever thermal suite is the dramatic hydro-therapy pool to help rejuvenate the mind and body with a cascading rain shower and therapeutic air jets in various locations around the pool. Passengers can also choose to relax on heated stone beds or soothing water beds, plus enjoy steam and sauna options using different temperatures, humidity zones, and aroma infusions to offer a sense of rejuvenation. New features include:
The Hammam – A Turkish-style steam bath to enhance well-being, the Hammam’s warm marble slab is a soothing addition to a massage and can be used with clay, mud or salt treatments.
The Caldarium – A feature taken from Roman times, this warm, light steam ceramic chamber offers an infusion of herbal aromas. Walls, floors and seats are heated for a deep penetrating warmth that promotes relaxation.
The Laconium – This warm, dry chamber gradually warms the body to help with purification and detoxification.
Sensory Showers – Passengers can choose from four different experiences: Tropical Rain, Cold Mist, Rain Shower or Siberian Shower, which also include dynamic mood lighting and aromas to enrich the experience.
Scrub & Shine Bar – As a prelude to any spa treatment, or as an addition to use in The Enclave, passengers can get recommendations from a “mixologist” for the perfect scrubs to complement their treatments. The bar offers a selection of salt and sugar scrubs to choose from, which can be “spiced up” by adding a mixture of herbs.
• Treatment Rooms – The Lotus Spa on Royal Princess features more treatment rooms than ever before (a total of 18), including two new luxurious Couples Villas. These private retreats offer a quiet place for time together with side-by-side massage tables, a soothing whirlpool bath, customized music for relaxation and a sitting area with ocean views.
Relaxation Lounge – A private space to relax before a treatment, this comfortable lounge features a calming atmosphere and scenic ocean views. Passengers can enjoy a cup of herbal tea or fruit-infused water as they unwind.
Lotus Spa Salon – The spa will also feature a full service salon featuring a new “social” nail bar with side-by-side stations for an interactive manicure experience. Included in the salon are private teeth whitening stations with individual TVs, pedicure stations and a barber shop for men.

The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess is a new-generation ship currently under construction for Princess Cruises. MSC Cruises Introduces Happy & Fun Time Dinners

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, Aug. 10: As a celebration of International Youth Day being observed Sunday, Aug. 12, MSC Cruises announces three innovative features which make it even easier for children to have a fun-packed family holiday at sea.

Happy Dinners
MSC Cruises has created the perfect recipe for a great family meal. Often, children don’t like being seated for hours while adults want to take their time over dinner. MSC Happy Dinners offers the best of both worlds! Children are served dinner from the kids’ menu while parents are enjoying their opening courses, with everyone dining together as a family.

However, when the children have finished, they no longer have to wait patiently for the adults to finish. With MSC Happy Dinners, the children are picked up by specialized Kids’ Club staff members when they’ve finished and are then free to have fun with friends their age, leaving parents to leisurely savor the different courses and wine and to enjoy the rest of their dinner.

Fun Time Dinner
For kids who relish their independence and would love the freedom of eating with their friends, away from the grownups, MSC Fun Time Dinners may prove even more tempting. With MSC Fun Time Dinners, children dine in a separate, specially decorated area of the buffet restaurant with the entertainment team, and then have fun in the Mini and Junior Club while parents enjoy a leisurely dinner alone, picking up the kids when they’ve finished.

Each night, children ages 3-11 can eat together with the entertainment team and their new friends. Three of these nights are theme partiesa Welcome Party, Italian Party, and Farewell and Birthday Partywhile the remaining four MSC Fun Time Dinners are fun from start to finish!

Both the MSC Happy Dinners and the MSC Fun Time Dinner services are now available free on all MSC ships. Dedicated to children ages 3-11, parents need to register their children in advance with the Mini or Junior Club and complete the special “dinner coupons.”

Extended Kids’ Club Hours
MSC Cruises has also extended the hours of its Kids’ Club program. Every morning from 9-10 a.m. and now also from 5-6 p.m., MSC Cruises offers a special program designed for babies and toddlers ages 10-36 months to spend quality time with their parents with the support of MSC Kids’ Club staff. Staff members organize dedicated games and activities aimed specifically at MSC’s youngest guests and their parents, including playing with bricks, musical games, baby disco, puzzle games and drawing.

Moms, dads and, most importantly, the kids, will be smiling all day long with Happy Dinners, Fun Time Dinners, extended hours and the amazing range of activities tailor-made for families on board the MSC fleet. With special events, recently-redesigned show spaces and a traditional gourmet Thanksgiving turkey feast, the Crystal Symphony voyage offers music lovers a decidedly celebratory, American-style luxury vacation experience.

"Jazz was born in America, so what better musical backdrop for one of the U.S.'s most treasured holidays along one of the country's most jaw-dropping coastlines?" says Bret Bullock, vice president of entertainment. "California's natural beauty and exciting cities don't need any jazzing up, but a little backbeat and soulful swing on board simply adds to the luxury of a Crystal experience."

Thanks to Jazzdagen Tours, some of the genre's leading artists from around the globe will headline at least four hours of jazz per day in the ship's new, posh lounges and theatres. The line-up, including bassist/vocalist Nicki Parrott, saxophonist Harry Allen, vocalist Rebecca Kilgore, percussionist Butch Miles, clarinetist Antti Sarpila, and band leader/clarinetist Pieter Meijers, will cover musical styles ranging from New Orleans jazz, bebop and ragtime to swing, boogie-woogie and jumpin' blues. Their combined experience includes performing in such venues as New York's Birdland, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Jazz Festival, and backing up some of the industry's greats, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman.

From L.A., the 7-day voyage visits Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Francisco (overnight) and Ensenada, Mexico. Until August 31, all-inclusive, "Book Now" fares start at $2,560/person, double occupancy, with attractive air add-ons from more than 90 North American gateways. Guests combining two luxury cruises, either from NY beforehand, or to Tahiti afterward, or traveling in a group of 6+, receive additional savings.

Crystal Cruises' award-winning entertainment offerings include a range of venues and performances, from cabaret nightclub to piano bar saloon; acclaimed productions to headline entertainers; and sophisticated enrichment activities to in-room Blu-ray-viewing, for all world travelers. Extension for New York Exhibition Celebrating the SS United States

NEW YORK, NY, August 7: As part of the SS United States Conservancy’s ongoing 60th anniversary celebration of America’s flagship it is proud to announce the extension of its popular Forbes Galleries exhibition “The Ocean Liner United States: Celebrating the Past and Future of America’s Flagship.” The exhibit which is free and open to the public will now run through Oct 20, 2012. The SS United States exhibition is open 10am – 4pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Prominent additions to the exhibit include one of the original wall panels from the "Duck" Suite, one of the first-class staterooms favored by frequent United States travelers including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, and Burt Lancaster. Painted in gold leaf by American artist Constance Smith, this stunning aluminum panel is displayed in its own gallery alongside enlargements of period color photography showing life aboard the liner, reproduced from the archive of collector Charles W. Howland.

“This ship is an irreplaceable national icon and symbol of our great nation,” states Robert L. Forbes, Vice President of Forbes and President of ForbesLife, who serves as a member of the Conservancy Board of Directors and helped make the exhibition possible. “This exhibit, special events and all the Conservancy’s work to save this ship give us an opportunity to celebrate, save and restore a national treasure and marvel of American innovation.”

On Tuesday, Octo 9, 2012 at 6pm, the Conservancy will host a panel discussion "Designing the SS United States" at the gallery, led by historian Pat Kirkham. The event will explore the unique contributions of women artists and designers to the famous vessel.

China, furniture, artwork and documents from the ship’s top-secret design are among more than 120 artifacts assembled including souvenirs from the maiden voyage. Items for the exhibition lent by collectors from across the country transport visitors back to an era of travel in grand style, where world leaders and celebrities roamed America’s flagship as she sped across the Atlantic. Through personal stories of crew members, tourists, and immigrants, the exhibition shines a spotlight on life aboard the ship in the 1950s and 1960s and conveys the SS United States’ special role as national symbol and cultural touchstone.

Built to be both luxury superliner and Cold War weapon, America’s flagship, the SS United States was the fastest and safest ocean liner ever built. Larger than the Titanic and faster than the Queen Mary, she was one of the greatest achievements of American engineering of the 20th Century. In July 1952, the ship smashed the transatlantic speed record on her historic maiden voyage– a record that remains unbroken.

The extension of the exhibition comes on the heels of the launch of the Conservancy’s new Save the United States campaign SavetheUnitedStates.org featuring an online museum and virtual SS United States experience that enables supporters of America’s flagship to save and personalize their own pieces of the historic vessel. Proceeds from the campaign will be used to restore the vessel’s exterior and establish a museum on board.

“The extension of this special exhibit will help us showcase this legendary liner and lay the groundwork for the extraordinary shipboard museum and the Conservancy’s future Center for American Design and Discovery,” states Susan Gibbs, Executive Director of the Conservancy and granddaughter of the ship’s designer, William Francis Gibbs. “The new Save the United States Campaign will help us bring these exciting plans to fruition.”

The Conservancy’s Redevelopment Project is also advancing plans to repurpose the SS United States, withdrawn from seagoing service in 1969, into a self-sustaining, multipurpose waterfront destination. The Forbes Galleries, New York are located at 62 Fifth Avenue (at 12th Street) in Manhattan. For more information about the SS United States visit ssusc.org.

Survey Reveals Generational Divide Over Relaxation Habits

SANTA CLARITA, CA, Aug. 7: The 2012 Princess Cruises Relaxation Report, commissioned in celebration of National Relaxation Day on Aug. 15, revealed that Boomers and their adult children’s generation of Millennials have very different vacation habits, from social media vices to work-life balance, with the latter finding it more difficult to, or simply refusing to, truly disconnect while on holiday.

The national survey found that Boomers (approximately 48-66 years of age) take their vacation time seriously, with more than one in three finding it impossible to go an entire vacation without doing anything work-related. In contrast, nearly six out of 10 Millennials (approximately 18-31 years of age) would not be able to completely disconnect from work on vacation. Millennials are also leaving relaxation time on the table. Of those employed with vacation time available to them, less than half are using all their paid time off. Boomers on the other hand, appreciate their vacation time and nearly 60 percent used all of their allotted time last year. One potential indication of why Millennials aren’t using all of their available vacation time is the fact that nearly one out of five reported they’re more relaxed when their boss goes on vacation than when they do.

The national survey was commissioned by Princess Cruises with Wakefield Research for the third annual Princess Cruises Relaxation Report. Princess Cruises, which annually helps more than 1.3 million passengers escape completely aboard its worldwide fleet of ships, conducts the survey to examine Americans’ ability and approach to relaxation and vacation trends.

“It’s evident through our survey findings that Americans’ approach to relaxation and vacationing is changing with each generation,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “We’ve always inherently known that different people find different settings and experiences relaxing, but to see such a clear shift between generations and their attitude toward embarking on a vacation escape and disconnecting completely is eye-opening. The good news, of course, is that a cruise vacation offers something for everyone.”

Social Media Vices
In addition to Americans’ varying views on relaxation, many were divided on whether social media is a must-have while on vacation. A vacation get-away won’t stop 85 percent of Millennials from making a social media update. In contrast, fewer than half of Boomers would update a social profile while on vacation. The No. 1 social media outlet for vacationing Americans is Facebook, where nearly six out of 10 Americans would likely make an update, 16 percent will reportedly visit YouTube and 15 percent will likely visit Twitter. But while social media is clearly important to most Americans, nothing says ‘relaxing escape’ to the majority of vacationers like a cocktail, according to the survey. More than 60 percent of respondents would rather go without social media than alcohol while on holiday…cheers!

Parenting & Relaxation – Do they blend?
They don’t blend for today’s parents. Sixty-four percent of parents have taken a vacation without their child, but that comes with a guilt price tag. Of the parents who have vacationed without their kids, 46 percent felt guilty for not taking their kids along, and moms in particular are more likely to feel the pain than dads. More than half of moms felt guilty about leaving their kids at home while hitting the road, but just over a third of dads share their guilty feelings.

Do New Friends and Vacation Mix?
It’s a mixed bag. Nearly half of Americans have made a “vacation friend” while on a trip. Of those outgoing Americans who have befriended someone during a relaxing escape, the average respondent made six new friends. So are vacation friends the hottest travel accessory? Princess Cruises polled Americans on which TV couple they’d most like to befriend on vacation. Forty percent of all Millennials would want Marshall and Lily from “How I Met Your Mother” as their TV couple of vacation friends. “Modern Family” TV couple Phil and Claire Dunphy, are Boomers’ No. 1 favorite with 33 percent.

Dream Escapes
When asked to describe their perfect vacation libation, 37 percent of females viewed their dream escape as a mai tai – tropical and beachy; whereas 27 percent of men think of their dream escape as a bottle of beer – party time! Perhaps a sign of the economic times – just over one in 10 respondents would classify their dream vacation as a glass of champagne – high-end all the way. Looking ahead to the end of summer, Princess Cruises queried Americans on what they most need to escape from before fall. The No. 1 response was hot weather (50 percent), followed by high gas prices (38 percent) and political campaigns (36 percent).

To Do or Not to Do?
Relaxation wins out! Fifty-seven percent of Americans’ describe their vacation style as a “relaxer” – sitting back and doing nothing — as opposed to the 43 percent who describe themselves as a “doer” – trying to fit in as many activities as they can into each trip. Interested in trying something new? Sixty-nine percent of Americans say they would try new food and drinks while on vacation, and 38 percent would accomplish something on their bucket list. Thirty-nine percent of Millennials would chat with a stranger, whereas nearly one in four Boomers would stay out all night.

Pop Culture Escape Break
Celebrity mamas are in need of a break! More than one in four Americans responded that of the soon-to-be celebrity moms, Reese Witherspoon is most in need of a pre-baby escape. Drew Barrymore is also an American favorite with 22 percent supporting her for a pre-baby getaway. Snooki and Tori Spelling are in the middle of the pack, with 18 percent and 16 percent. At the bottom of the list are Sarah Michelle Gellar and Anna Paquin, with 10 percent and 8 percent.

On the celebrity vacation friend front, more than one in four females would like to hang out with Chelsea Handler on a relaxing beach day, whereas 25 percent of all men would rather share their sunblock with Jay Leno. In analyzing generational preferences, Boomers prefer Jay over any other late night host (29 percent), while Millennials would rather buddy up with Chelsea Handler (33 percent) or Jimmy Fallon (26 percent).

Politics, Politics!
In the presidential race, almost half of all Americans think President Obama is the candidate most in need of a relaxing escape from the public eye. Only 20 percent of Americans think Mitt Romney is most in need of a break. Millennials and Boomers differ once again on the candidate’s wives, with over one in five Millennials believing Michelle Obama is in most need of an escape, as opposed to 17 percent of Boomers who think Ann Romney is most in need of an escape.

About the 2012 Survey
The Princess Cruises 2012 Relaxation Report was conducted by Wakefield Research among 1,000 American adults, ages 18 and older, between June 28 through July 5, 2012, using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas have been set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the U.S. adult population 18 and older.

Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.

New Legends Lineup Will Rock Norwegian Epic This Fall

MIAMI, August 2: Norwegian Cruise Line today announced the next three "Legends" to perform as part of Legends in Concert on board Norwegian Epic beginning Saturday, Nov 3, 2012, when the ship returns to Miami, Florida to begin her weekly Eastern Caribbean sailings. The tribute artists will perform as some of the world's most recognized entertainers – Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Jimmy Buffett. A staple on the Las Vegas center strip for over 25 years, Legends in Concert is the pioneer of live tribute shows and has assembled the greatest collection of live tribute artists and celebrity look-alikes in all of show business.

"Our guests absolutely love the Legends in Concert performances on board Norwegian Epic. The next round of tribute artists, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Jimmy Buffett, three extraordinary performers, are destined to be fan favorites," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer. "With Norwegian Epic returning to its homeport in Miami, this is the perfect time to introduce these three talented performers to guests sailing to the Caribbean."

Portraying the legendary “King of Pop,” J Lucas is known for entertaining his audiences with intensity and passion. Lucas has been a beloved member of the "Legends in Concert" family for many years where he has wowed fans in Las Vegas on Harrah’s main stage. Hailing from South Carolina, Lucas has been performing as a singer/dancer since he was a teenager. As a young boy, Lucas was heavily influenced by Michael Jackson and fine-tuned his talents as a Legend by following Jackson’s career closely. Following the death of Jackson in 2009, Lucas performed at a tribute concert and from there began performing Michael Jackson tribute shows throughout the country before joining the Legends in Concert family. In addition to his Legends’ performances, Lucas is also a very talented song-writer who has written and collaborated on over 100 songs.

Portraying Donna Summer, Marva Scott has been an integral part of the Legends in Concert production for many years. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Scott made her singing debut as a young girl in her local Baptist church choir. After performing in local theatrical productions, Scott took her talents to Los Angeles, where she started her own band, Marva Scott and the MCR. While there, she also discovered her talents for celebrity impersonation. Following her time in Los Angeles, Scott briefly lived in Paris and then returned to the United States where she began performing in the main showroom of Caesar’s Palace in Atlantic City, as well as in countless productions along the Las Vegas strip. Performing as the legendary “Queen of Disco” Donna Summer, Scott will light up the stage on board Norwegian Epic.

Barrie Cunningham is a producer, entertainer, singer and musician who has spent most of his life entertaining delighted audiences in a variety of venues – from concert halls to cruise ships. Cunningham will join Norwegian Epic’s Legends in Concert lineup as the legendary Jimmy Buffett, the impersonation performance for which he is best known. A Southern California native, Cunningham started performing folk music in coffeehouses at the young age of 15. He later went on to join the popular California rock-a-billy group, Black Slacks, and was named Entertainer of the Year in San Diego. Since 1990, Cunningham has performed an impressive 300 dates per year, in front of more than three million show-goers. Although he is best known for his live performances, Cunningham also has own original material and has written songs for many other popular artists.

Legends in Concert is a live musical celebration featuring the world's greatest celebrity tribute artists. Legends in Concert on Norwegian Epic features three celebrity tribute performers taking the stage in the Epic Theater for six 45-minute shows over three days during a seven-day cruise. In addition, a Legends “Unplugged” show is performed on three additional nights in the Manhattan Room, the ship's New York-inspired supper club, providing an unprecedented dining and entertainment experience. The celebrity performers change every four months, keeping the show fresh and exciting. The last performers were Steven Tyler, Lady Gaga and Elvis Presley.

Norwegian Epic returns to her Miami homeport on Nov 3, 2012. The ship will sail a series of seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises, departing every Saturday, through April 13, 2013. Ports of call include St. Maarten and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; Nassau, Bahamas, as well as three relaxing days at sea. EU's Sustainable Cruise Waste-Management Project Is Under Way On Costa Pacifica

GENOA: The Sustainable Cruise waste-management project co-funded by the European Commission through the LIFE+ Program, the European Union’s funding instrument for environmental projects, is under way aboard Costa Pacifica. The project seeks to stimulate implementation of the EU directive on waste on board ships and create incentives for waste reduction, recycling and reuse.

"We are very proud to be managing this highly innovative project on board Costa Pacifica, which will be the pilot ship for new models of management of certain types of solid waste," said Ernesto Gori, Costa Cruises vice president, quality standards compliance and auditing. "The fact that we are the first cruise company in the world to carry out such a landmark experiment, which will lead to even higher standards in the treatment of shipboard waste, is further tangible evidence of our environmental excellence."

Costa Cruises is the project manager, and devised the proposal and presented it to the EU together with Centro interuniversitario per lo Sviluppo della Sostenibilità dei Prodotti and the Italian enterprises VOMM, Contento Trade, Design Innovation, RINA Services and Medcruise, the association of Mediterranean cruise ports.

Costa Pacifica (114,500 gross tons and 3,780 total guests), which entered service in 2009, was chosen to pilot the world’s first shipboard experimental project using innovative techniques and methods for packaging, biodegradable (organic) waste and paper, with specific objectives for reduction at the source and recycling. The project includes intervention in packaging—cardboard boxes, glass bottles, plastic bottles and containers—to reduce that type of waste at the origin, with the cooperation of product suppliers.

Another project area concerns wet waste—food and other organic waste—which on a ship like Costa Pacifica that carries nearly 5,000 guests and crew accounts for 22 percent of total waste. In compliance with international MARPOL laws protecting the marine environment, currently food waste is collected and processed to reduce the volume before it is discharged overboard as fish food. The state-of-the-art technology used by the Sustainable Cruise project instead processes the “pulp” produced from food waste into compost, a useful byproduct.

The third category involves paper, which accounts for about 16 percent of total waste on Costa Pacifica. Sustainable Cruise has already analyzed the waste flow (supply, storage, use and disposal) of paper on board the vessel. Work is now focusing on devising processes that can be applied to reduce paper at the source, reuse it or dispose of it sustainably.

The scope of the project goes beyond shipboard application and includes coordination with European port waste disposal facilities to increase recycling and reuse, and promote a Euro-Mediterranean network of ports to cooperate on waste management.

Sustainable Cruise also aims to set a new voluntary certification scheme for shipboard waste treatment, possibly paving the way for the introduction of specific EU environmental legislation for shipping. The Sustainable Cruise project dovetails with Costa Cruises’ fleetwide waste-management policy of 100 percent separation of solid waste on board, with separate storage and disposal of glass, plastic, metal, food, paper, ceramics and aluminum.

More details of the European Sustainable Cruise project and regular updates regarding the results of the work are posted at sustainablecruise.eu.

The Sustainable Cruise project reflects Costa Cruises’ environmental compliance leadership. Not only does the company comply with all domestic and international environmental laws and regulations, it also voluntarily proactively implements possible solutions designed to enhance environmental protection. The environmental management system implemented on all Costa ships is developed in accordance with the requirements of UNI EN ISO 14001/2004. All ships in Costa’s fleet have received RINA’s Green Star notation, certifying they operate in compliance with environmental-protection standards that are stricter than the provisions of the MARPOL Convention.
