Updated News from the Port of Miami

Cruise Ship Delayed Off Miami in Security Breach

MIAMI 9/16/01 (Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard stopped a Royal Caribbean cruise ship from coming into Miami on Sunday while it swept the port after finding a security breach in the Port of Miami's passenger terminal.

The three-hour delay reflected heightened security at airports and ports around the country since hijackers used commercial passenger planes to attack New York and Washington on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said an open door was discovered leading to secure areas late on Saturday.

Officers conducted a full security sweep of the port overnight.

The Voyager of the Seas, which can carry 3,114 passengers, was set to depart Miami later in the day.

9/13/01 - The Coast Guard announced Thursday that it planned to have boats escort all cruise ships and tankers in and out of the world's busiest cruise port and maintain a 100-yard security zone around the ships.

"That's the routine right now,'' Petty Officer Robert Suddarth said. "I know it was planned for this one before we knew of all this.''

Several Coast Guard cutters are patrolling off the mouth of the port as a heightened security measure in response to Tuesday's attacks, he said.

Port Everglades also increased security for a variety of cruise ships scheduled to use the Fort Lauderdale port this weekend. INS screening is planned for all passengers.
