Port Canaveral Reaches Terms with Norwegian & Royal Caribbean

PORT CANAVERAL, FL, Feb 28: Canaveral Port Authority next month expects to sign contracts with Norwegian and Royal Caribbean cruise lines after recently reaching terms that expand commitments from both companies.

The agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a multi-year deal that would continue port of call visits from the Breakaway and Gem for the next three years, with options for two additional years. In addition, NCL also will homeport a ship at Port Canaveral in 2015-2016 for a partial-year deployment.

A new letter of intent with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL) outlines a 10-year contract with two five-year options and financial guarantees. The current agreement expires on the last day of this year and is valued at $7 million. Under the new terms, minimum passenger fees increase to $9.7 million this year and grow to $16.7 million by 2024. The cruise line also will provide an additional $48 million during the next decade in an added terminal facility fee to become the priority berth user of the new Cruise Terminal 1, which currently is under construction in the Cove area of Port Canaveral and is scheduled to open in November. Royal Caribbean also will continue some use of Cruise Terminal 10.

Total combined value is an average of almost $20 million per year in minimum passenger fees during the next 10 years. Ship deployments are flexible and RCCL will decide and announce new deployments when appropriate. Currently, Enchantment of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas sail year round from Port Canaveral. This winter, Explorer of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas are scheduled for port of call stops at Port Canaveral and the new Quantum of the Seas will start making transit calls starting this November. Also in November, Explorer of the Seas will homeport at Canaveral, offering 26 sailings of 9- and 5-day cruises.

“These agreements are the results of hard work and pencil sharpening to finalize the costs and terms and our Board looks forward to considering these contracts during our meeting next month,” said Tom Weinberg, chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority Commission. “We applaud the efforts of our staff and are delighted that our cruise line partners see the value of expansion and long-term commitments to Port Canaveral from which our community will continue to experience the economic benefits.”

Canada's Largest Labor Council Initiates Boycott of Carnival Cruises

TORONTO, Feb. 20: Canada's largest labor council, representing 200,000 working families, has initiated a boycott of Carnival Corporation cruises and hopes the protest campaign will spread across the country. The Toronto and York Region Labor Council has launched the boycott to protest the role of Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald in a protracted labor dispute at the Toronto operations of manufacturing giant Crown Holdings. Donald is a key member of the Crown Holdings board of directors and bears direct responsibility for Crown's attack on the working and living standards of Crown employees, said Toronto and York Region Labor Council President John Cartwright.

"We are sending an important message to Arnold Donald that we hold him responsible for Crown's union busting. He can't hide in the boardroom anymore, he can and must act to stop Crown's attacks," Cartwright said.

Crown Holdings provoked the labor dispute at its Toronto plant by demanding ruthless cuts, including a two-tier wage plan that would permanently reduce new and younger workers' wages by up to $9/hour. About 120 members of the United Steelworkers (USW) have been walking the picket line at Crown's metal packaging facility in an attempt to fend off the company's concessionary demands.

"We intend to expand the Carnival boycott across Canada and the U.S. now that Canada's largest labor council has taken this first step," said Ken Neumann, the USW's Canadian Director. "There are literally tens of thousands of union members and retirees who can afford to take Carnival's cruises because of good union wages and decent retirements. But Arnold Donald is slapping all working people in the face with these demands. Carnival stands to lose a lot of customers as the boycott expands."

The USW is talking to retiree groups and unions across Canada about joining the Carnival boycott, Neumann said. "We are exposing each member of Crown's board of directors and holding them accountable for the company's shameful position towards our members," he said. "Donald sits on the compensation committee of Crown's board and approved paying the Crown CEO $6,000 per hour and lucrative executive retirement benefits, while remaining silent as the company slashed wages and benefits of workers throughout North America."

Carnival Corporation is the world's largest cruise company and operates cruise ships under the Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Cunard, Aida, Ibero, P&O, Seabourn and Costa brands. Autism on the Seas™ Launches the Cruise Industry’s First “Autism-Friendly”
Ship Certification Standard & Training Program

Shelton, CT, Feb 20: Autism on the Seas™ (AotS), the leading travel organization catering to vacationers with autism and other developmental disabilities, today announced the introduction of the travel industry’s first “Autism Friendly” Certification Standard & Training Program for cruise lines. Royal Caribbean International is the first cruise line to receive certification from Autism on the Seas, thereby assisting with reasonable accommodations for inclusion and participation by guests with autism and developmental disabilities. Effective immediately, Royal Caribbean’s entire fleet is comprised of Bronze Level certified “Autism Friendly” ships. The fleet is expected to achieve Silver Level certification by the end of 2014.

“Offering cruise lines a Standard that includes training for their staff to effectively accommodate the needs of the growing and underserved autism community marks a turning point in the travel and cruise industry,” says Mike Sobbell, founder and president of Autism on the Seas. “We are very proud to bring Royal Caribbean on as our first “Autism Friendly” Cruise Line Certified partner. Royal Caribbean’s involvement and initiative to accommodate this community is to be commended, and will open the door towards filling the gap for special needs families seeking a vacation designed for their wide range of unique requirements.”

"We are honored to be the first cruise line to achieve Autism Friendly certification," said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, executive vice president of Operations for Royal Caribbean International. "Royal Caribbean is a global leader in taking guests to unforgettable destinations and is committed to catering to vacationers of all abilities. We have worked with Autism on the Seas for more than seven years to better provide accessible cruise vacation options for families with autism."

About Autism on the Seas Cruise Line “Autism Friendly” Certification Standard & Training
Autism on the Seas Cruise Line Autism Friendly Certification Standard is designed as a guideline for cruise lines to ensure their pre-cruise and onboard services, venues and amenities are accessible for inclusion and participation by the autism and developmental disability community. The reasonable accommodations to comply with this Standard are, and can be, customized to each cruise line’s policies, procedures and ships, to ensure sustainability and effectiveness in retaining the scope and intent of the certification. Certifications are awarded by individual ship. Depending on the certification level, ships may be required to conform to seven categories, including:

1.Cruise Staff Training
2.Youth Program
3.Pre-Vacation Planning & Services
4.Dining/Dietary
5.Disability Accommodations
6.Guest Satisfaction & Feedback
7.Support for “Cruises with Autism on the Seas Staff”

Four Autism Friendly Certification Levels
There are four levels of certification, each progressing with increased levels of staff training.

• Bronze Certification: Confirms the ship’s readiness to accommodate guests with autism and other developmental disabilities to provide equal access onboard services and amenities. Some of the reasonable accommodations include providing sensory related toys and cruise social story, autism friendly modification to youth activities (where appropriate), autism friendly movies, priority boarding, dietary offerings (including gluten free and dairy free), and several modifications to services for groups of guests with disabilities. See AutismontheSeas.com for a full list.
• Silver, Gold and Diamond Level: Focuses on increased staff training. Silver Level ensures that all Youth Staff have received basic awareness training in autism and other developmental disabilities. Gold Level ensures that all Youth Staff have received advanced training, and we provide other shipboard staff with basic awareness training. Diamond Level ensures that we provide “hands-on” training for our Youth Staff.

Visit AutismOnTheSeas.com for a list of Certified Ships, details on the Certification Standard Criteria, and information on the first Autism on the Seas “Cruise with Staff” aboard Royal Caribbean’s Bronze Certified “Serenade of the Seas” departing New Orleans on March 8th to Key West and the Bahamas (and other cruises).

Norwegian Cruise Line to Install Scrubbers on Six Ships

MIAMI, Feb 13: To further the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that the line will make a significant investment in the installation of 28 scrubbers on six ships in the line’s fleet. The company has contracted with Green Tech Marine for the outfitting of the scrubbers on Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Sun. The scrubbers will be installed starting this spring and installation will continue through 2016. Green Tech Marine also supplied the scrubbers on the line’s Hawaii-based Pride of America last year and will deliver 10 scrubbers to the company’s two new builds, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, being constructed at MEYER WERFT in Germany.

“We remain committed to environmental protection at Norwegian Cruise Line,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Therefore, it is important for us to invest in new technologies, such as Green Tech’s innovative scrubber systems, in order to reduce fuel emissions, overall energy consumption, and the company’s environmental footprint.”

Green Tech Marine is a world leading scrubber supplier that develops innovative, environmentally friendly, high-performance, energy-saving solutions to the marine industry. Green Tech’s compact scrubber systems will replace the current silencers on all six Norwegian vessels.

"We are very pleased to have Norwegian Cruise Line as a returning customer," says CEO Peter Strandberg. “The decision to install scrubber systems on six additional ships demonstrates Norwegian Cruise Line’s commitment to environmental regulations and reaffirms that Green Tech Marine’s scrubbers have taken a strong position in the exhaust gas cleaning market.”

MTN's Hybrid Network Transforms Communications At-Sea on the New Norwegian Getaway

MIRAMAR, FL, Feb. 12: MTN Communications (MTN) announces it is supporting Norwegian Cruise Line's launch of the newly-Christened Norwegian Getaway with its advanced hybrid communications network. This innovative network enables satellite and terrestrial broadband connectivity for higher performance connections on large vessels both at-sea and in-port. With approximately 4,000 guests and 1,600 crew, Norwegian Getaway, the world's newest cruise ship, is the first to showcase one of the most visionary communications solutions at sea today. While sailing in the open sea is a remote experience, guests and crew members don't want to leave their "connected lives" back in port. Being able to share experiences as they are happening, and staying connected to friends and family while on vacation, are must-haves for consumers today.

"MTN and Norwegian Cruise Line are delivering another first, much like we did in the 1980s with the initial Internet access ever at sea," said Chris Leber, executive vice president, commercial business development, MTN. "Since then, faster land-like connectivity has become clearly expected. However, the challenge has been staying ahead of demand, while dealing with the cost of adding more satellite bandwidth for guests and crew applications. MTN's advanced hybrid communications network allows cruise operators to focus on their core business. When vessels are in port, they switch over to MTN's Terrestrial Broadband Network, which delivers much higher-performance and speed. Norwegian Getaway is the premier showcase in how to address the insatiable demand for connectivity, speed and content."

Cruise ships traditionally have relied solely on satellite bandwidth. The new MTN Terrestrial Broadband Network delivers faster, more efficient connections, enables access to applications and content, and optimizes corporate IT data. This allows people to bring their daily online habits with them to sea, including social media, infotainment, content and more.
Between 2008 and 2013, MTN managed a six-fold increase in satellite bandwidth requirements as a result of Internet, content and voice usage. Internet logins on the MTN network more than doubled to almost 33 million per year. Voice communications increased approximately 50 percent.

"Norwegian Getaway is one of the most technologically advanced ships all around, including how guests and crew can communicate and access content," said Vincent Cirel, senior vice president and CIO, Norwegian Cruise Line. "For example, with MTN's hybrid satellite and terrestrial network, we know our crew and guests will have the communications experience they expect, increasing guest satisfaction and crew morale."

To support this new hybrid network, MTN equipped Norwegian Getaway with the industry's most sophisticated software systems to maintain multiple types of connections simultaneously. It also uses the fastest data path available so it can access terrestrial broadband when near and in ports. A broadband antenna tracking and stabilization system enables the ship to "lock" onto an MTN access point in-port for terrestrial broadband connectivity with no impact to the end user during the switchover.

Key to this land-like level of service, the shipboard data center of Norwegian Getaway also is equipped with the industry's most advanced processing technologies. Leveraging these technologies, MTN is delivering improved efficiency and throughput for Internet, television, and crew calling services on the vessel. "The MTN vision of dramatically improving communications at sea is now a reality on Norwegian Getaway," Leber concluded. "This is thanks to advanced terrestrial broadband connectivity as the very first step. Crew and guests can stay connected, consume content and network during their amazing voyages."

Carnival Cruise Lines Debuts New TV Spot As National Exclusive Cruise Line Advertiser
for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games

MIAMI, Feb 5: Carnival Cruise Lines today announced it is the national cruise line advertiser of NBC’s telecast of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, debuting a new marketing campaign featuring a tailored TV spot along with cinema and digital elements. The company will also provide other fun ways for fans to celebrate the season through social channels, including a Carnival Cruise Lines #ChampionSHIPS contest that challenges people to participate in a photo competition involving fun, cruise-themed categories on Instagram. The new campaign is designed to build additional consumer interest during what is known as “wave season”--key window for generating cruise reservations. Carnival recently announced a record reservations month in January citing unprecedented Web traffic and strong support from travel professionals.

Carnival’s new “Bobslide” TV spot follows four young, thrill-seeking cruisers who race together down one of Carnival’s popular waterslides. As the children stride across the deck in slow motion, a sportscaster voice over calls the action saying, “Here’s the crew to beat today: Carnival-1. Hard to believe they just met yesterday.” Donning goggles and bathing suits, the four-kid team twists and turns through the giant slide, reaching the finish line with big smiles, arms raised and a gigantic splash, creating a memorable moment for all. The sportscaster exclaims, “That was a run for the ages!”

“With our brand motto of ‘Fun for All, All for Fun,’ we couldn’t think of a better time to showcase our spirit than during NBC’s broadcast of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games,” said Jim Berra, chief marketing officer for Carnival Cruise Lines. “As part of our ongoing marketing campaign, our new ‘Bobslide’ spot is not only emblematic of the amazing moments millions will celebrate this February, it also illustrates the fun and memorable experiences our guests of all ages enjoy every day on Carnival cruises.”

Carnival will also create more ways for fans to get in on the action through a series of contests, videos and posts on the line’s highly trafficked social channels. Each week via Instagram, Carnival will encourage fans to compete in a fun photo contest in various categories such as best game face, best sand versus snow image, and best water slider. Fans submitting winning photos will receive Carnival Cruise Lines gift cards valued at $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place.

Among a variety of other social media initiatives, Carnival will post a collection of videos that provide instructions on how to create winter-weather inspired warm cocktail recipes developed by the cruise line’s master mixologist. The videos will be viewable via YouTube and promoted on Carnival’s various social channels. Additionally, in honor of the great international event, Carnival crew members, who hail from more than 100 countries, will cheer on winter sport athletes from their home teams on video messages that will also be featured on Carnival’s social channels.

More on the Marketing Campaign
The new 30-second TV spot will debut on Feb 6, 2014, and will air on NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, NBC Sports Network and USA Network throughout the duration of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The new ad will also air in select cinemas across the country and will feature an interactive Shazam call-to-action for consumers to enter a sweepstakes offering a free Carnival cruise vacation to the grand prize winner. Carnival will also serve as the sponsor of Yahoo! Sports’ “Memorable Olympic Moments” hub, incorporating a mix of high-impact ads encouraging fans to “Get ready to cheer for fun that unites us all,” and “Make memories worth replaying.”

American Cruise Lines Designates Newbuilds for Mississippi & Columbia Rivers

GUILFORD, CT, Feb 4: American Cruise Lines today confirmed it will be placing the first of four upcoming newbuilds on the Mississippi River, where it currently operates its newest riverboat, Queen of the Mississippi. The second newbuild will operate in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, where the line is operating the 120-passenger Queen of the West. Construction of both new riverboats is well underway at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, MD.

The new Mississippi riverboat will have a similar capacity to Queen of the Mississippi at 150 passengers, and will enter service in March of 2015. The new Columbia riverboat will follow later that same year. It will be slightly larger than American Cruise Lines’ other riverboats, with a planned capacity of 175 passengers. Similar in design, both will feature fully functioning paddlewheels.

The two new ships, as of yet unnamed, will enable American Cruise Lines to offer expanded itineraries on the Mississippi River System and the Columbia and Snake Rivers, adding new cruise options for those looking to experience these unique regions.  The line currently runs numerous eight-day cruises on both rivers, offering various themes from wine and jazz music, to Mark Twain and the Lewis and Clark expedition.

“Demand on the Mississippi is high, and the Columbia River has not seen a new riverboat in many years,” said Timothy Beebe, Vice President of American Cruise Lines. “The new riverboats will offer the finest experience available in these regions, while maintaining the historic feel and authenticity of historic American river cruising.”

Both riverboats will feature historic accents and modern conveniences, as well as the latest safety technologies. They will feature the largest, most well-appointed staterooms on the rivers, and almost all will have large sliding glass doors offering panoramic views and entirely private balconies. A glass-enclosed dining room and various spacious lounge venues are also planned. During the cruise, guests will learn about the region’s history and culture, while enjoying personalized service and the comforts of the finest riverboats in North America. Carnival Cruise Lines Reports Record Sales; Sets All-Time High
For Number Of Guests Booked In A Single Month

MIAMI, Feb. 3: Carnival Cruise Lines set a one-month reservations record, taking net bookings (new reservations minus cancellations) for more than 565,000 guests between January 1 and January 31, 2014. The record number of reservations was 17 percent higher than the same one-month period a year ago. Additionally, traffic to the cruise line's web site www.carnival.com also reached an all-time high with 13 million visits during the one-month period. Bookings were at unprecedented levels across the line's 24-ship fleet, which operates three- to 23-day voyages from a wide range of convenient North American homeports as well as cruises from Australia.

Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill attributed the record booking activity to a number of factors, including continued product enhancements and innovations being introduced across the Carnival fleet, very attractive promotions in the marketplace, strong support from travel agent partners, and a new "Moments that Matter" advertising campaign launched last fall, which is currently in heavy rotation in broadcast and digital channels. Cahill also cited increasing recognition among consumers that Carnival cruises provide a truly exceptional vacation value.

"Now is the time of year when many people focus on their upcoming vacation plans and the cruise industry typically sees an escalation in booking activity. We are definitely observing a strong uptick in reservations with bookings coming in at unprecedented levels," said Cahill. "We are seeing heavy sales growth in all channels, particularly via our travel agent partners, and we would like to express our tremendous appreciation for their support," he added. Cahill also pointed out that Carnival did not introduce any new ships in 2013 so added capacity would not account for the stronger booking activity. "More than anything, I believe consumers are increasingly recognizing that, when it comes to an exceptional vacation experience at a great value, Carnival easily comes out on top."

Among the new initiatives introduced over past several months are a one-of-kind vacation guarantee that gives consumers the option of ending their voyage early and flying home at Carnival's expense if they are dissatisfied for any reason, a comprehensive revamp of the line's main dining room offerings, and a fun and exciting partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to enhance the activities programming for Carnival's youngest guests. Last month, the line announced an enhancement to its live music offerings through upgraded house bands and the Carnival LIVE concert series which features performances by many of today's top artists including Jennifer Hudson, Gavin DeGraw, Lady Antebellum, Olivia Newton-John, Daughtry, Styx, Martina McBride, Jewel and many others.

Additionally, the line has continued to roll out its $500 million Fun Ship 2.0 product enhancement program across the fleet, which includes a variety of hugely popular new dining, bar and entertainment upgrades. In 2014, a total of 11 Carnival ships will feature major Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements, including vessels that sail from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, Tampa, New Orleans and Galveston.
