Cunard Line Honored with Distinguished Service Award

Oct 31: Cunard Line made history last Wednesday at the National Maritime Historical Society’s 50th Anniversary Gala Awards Dinner in New York when it became the first company ever to receive the Society’s Distinguished Service Award for its outstanding contributions and efforts to promote maritime heritage. Former DSA recipients include Op-Sail founders Frank Braynard and Howard Slotnick, Amistad godfather Warren Marr, former Secretaries of the Navy, Author Clive Cussler, Ted Turner, and Walter Cronkite.

Held each fall in the Model Room of the historic New York Yacht Club, the ceremony distinguishes industry leaders, who through their personal efforts and creativity have made honorable impacts to the maritime field. Stanley Birge, vice president of North America for Cunard Line, was joined by a number of maritime industry guests, including historians, authors, business owners, Travel Agents, port services professionals, the United States Coast Guard, and media journalists. This year’s recipients also included Stan Honey, director of technology for America’s Cup Event Authority, and Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz of the United States Coast Guard, the first woman in American history to head a military service academy.

“We are truly honored to be recognized among such an elite group of maritime dignitaries and believe it is in large part due to organizations like the NMHS that Cunard continues to thrive today, especially in this rapidly changing world,” said Stanley Birge, vice president, North America, for Cunard Line. “As a union of people who represent a variety of expertise, we feel it is with the basis of contributions, such as those of Mr. Honey and Rear Admiral Stosz that Cunard can continue to drive the future of what ocean liner travel is meant to be.”

“It was most fitting that we presented Cunard with the NMHS Distinguished Service Award,” said Burchenal Green, president of the National Maritime Historical Society. "With a history spanning nearly 175 years, Cunard exudes a passion for the importance of not only preserving its illustrious maritime heritage, but also to contemporizing the legacy for today’s maritime and ocean voyage enthusiasts with their modern fleet of three Queens.”

Children Unleash Their Inner Super Hero, Become Iron Man & Meet Captain America Aboard Disney Magic

CELEBRATION, FL: Marvel’s Avengers Academy is now accepting new recruits for training onboard the Disney Magic for a multi-day experience that transports kids to an elite facility for super hero training. Calling Disney’s Oceaneer Club its new seaward home, Marvel’s The Avengers make their presence known in an epic way. Young heroes are transported to a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division)—a technologically advanced remote command post used by The Avengers for special missions and operations training. Throughout the base, displays featuring some of the equipment that helps to make The Avengers earth’s mightiest heroes—Iron Man’s high-tech suit of armor, Captain America’s shield and Thor’s hammer—inspire super hero “recruits” throughout their academy missions.

Become Iron Man
Inside Marvel’s Avengers Academy, young hero hopefuls will get to virtually wear one of Iron Man’s suits during a simulated training experience on a video screen display. With a little help from J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System), the simulation gives recruits the opportunity to test out the suit’s repulsor system and flight mode—just like Iron Man.

Trainees begin by virtually suiting up, piece-by-piece in the armor, and testing their agility in the suit. Then, recruits practice accuracy with the repulsor system blasting targets—this fully interactive experience is complete with lighting effects, immersing the young heroes in the experience. The training simulation concludes with a fast-paced flight test to get kids used to jetting around in the suit—a skill that they may find handy in the future.

Avengers Assemble!
The fun continues with Become a Hero. When the kids enter the high-tech S.H.I.E.L.D. base at Marvel’s Avengers Academy, they are briefed by Director Nick Fury on the constant presence of fearsome villains—and the need to train new recruits to keep the world safe from evil. The kids learn that Hydra continues to be a nefarious force that The Avengers continue to battle all over the world.

After Nick Fury signs off, kids are put to work building super-suits of their own by constructing masks, capes, chest plates and repulsor rays to reflect their own super powers. Once their hero suits are ready, the real work begins—skills training to learn telepathic powers and target practice with their repulsor rays. By the end of their first day, recruits are well on their way to active duty hero work when the training is interrupted by a surprise appearance of one of their favorite Marvel super heroes—Captain America himself. Checking-in on the training, Captain America teaches the group the “Avengers Assemble” call sign so they can truly step into the role of The Avengers.

On Day Two of Marvel’s Avengers Academy, recruits report for more training of their super-skills, when S.H.I.E.L.D. intercepts an urgent transmission—Super-villain Red Skull has planned another elaborate diabolical plot to turn a “certain sea vessel” into a deadly weapon. With The Avengers on assignment on the other side of the globe, it becomes clear that it’s up to the newest recruits to formulate a plan to save the planet.

Recruits realize the task may be harder than they thought when things take a turn for the worse—they soon find that their own Youth Activities counselors have been put under an evil spell that the kids must break. With time running out quickly, kids will need to use their super hero powers and creative reasoning to work together to find a solution to thwart Red Skull’s evil plans so that they can save the Avengers and prevent the Disney Magic from takeover.

Disney’s Oceaneer Club, open to 3- to 12-year-old children, is a completely re-imagined area that transports little ones to the magical realms of brave super heroes, adventuresome toys, fanciful fairies and Mickey Mouse’s club for creativity and fun. SEATTLE, Oct. 28: Holland America Line's ms Noordam will now sail cruises with central and western Mediterranean itineraries in spring and summer 2014. The new itineraries will allow for longer voyages, including the introduction of three new 11-day itineraries with several departures each and numerous Collectors' Voyages up to 33 days. This itinerary features six calls throughout the beautiful Greek Isles, including Katakolon (Olympia), Navplion, Piraeus (Athens), Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini. The ship also calls at Kusadasi, Turkey, home to Ephesus, and Naples, Italy.

The Sept. 16 "Venetian Adventure" voyage sails round-trip Civitavecchia (Rome) with an overnight at Venice mid-voyage. The ship also calls at Messina after scenic cruising along the Strait of Messina, Valletta, Kotor, Split, Dubrovnik and Kerkira (Corfu).

A round-trip Civitavecchia (Rome) "Mediterranean Dream" cruise departs Sept. 27 and calls at Katakolon (Olympia), Navplion, Piraeus (Athens), Mykonos, Kusadasi, Rhodes, Santorini and Naples.

Travelers looking to explore more of the Mediterranean can book a longer Collectors' Voyage that combines two or three of the 11-day cruises. For example, the 33-day "Best of the Mediterranean" cruise departs April 4 and combines the April 4, 15 and 26 departures. The 22-day "Mediterranean and Adriatic Explorer" combines the May 18, 29 and June 9 sailings. Each month through September will offer a combination that features 22- to 33-day Collectors' Voyage options.

Passengers enjoying seagoing holiday cruises will find some new activities onboard as well as favorite celebrations to make sure the season is merry and bright. The festivities begin with spirited Halloween and Thanksgiving cruises and continue with fun-filled cruises over Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Day. Whether sailing through sunny waters of the Caribbean or South Pacific, or cruising Down Under in Australia and New Zealand, ships will be decked from stem to stern, and may even experience a unique snowfall.

“Tis the season to leave work and cold weather behind, and instead truly relax and enjoy holiday festivities,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “Our shipboard teams make sure passengers can make the most of seasonal celebrations, with favorite things such as our annual snowfall in the atrium, plus new traditions.”

Halloween Happenings – Spooky characters will be haunting the ships as “stowaways” throughout the fleet. For those who can talk to the birds, a new turkey calling contest will crown the best gobbler. Dining rooms will serve up a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings, and turkey carving demonstrations will get passengers ready to do the honors at their next holiday feast. Costa Cruises Launches 'Slow Cruising' with Costa neoCollection

HOLLYWOOD, FL, Oct. 23: Costa Cruises is introducing "slow cruising" on Costa neoRiviera and Costa neoRomantica, a new style of cruising with longer, leisurely itineraries and extended time in port. In addition to a more intimate and exclusive onboard atmosphere on its two smaller ships, Costa's neoCollection focuses on local foods and wines, and custom-developed small-group immersive shore excursions. Many neoCollection itineraries are exclusive to the line's smaller "neo" ships that can sail to destinations inaccessible to larger vessels. Itineraries are designed with longer stopovers at each port, often overnight and part of the next day, to allow maximum time on shore.

As part of the immersive neoCollection experience, shore excursions for groups of 25 or fewer guests have been designed to highlight cultural and natural attractions in each destination. New menus developed in collaboration with Università delle Scienze Gastronomiche in Pollenza, Italy, feature authentic cuisine that incorporates local food and wines.

The relatively small size of Costa neoRiviera (624 cabins) and Costa neoRomantica (789 cabins) makes them ideal for slow cruising because they can visit smaller ports, the shipboard ambience is warm and inviting, and the service is more refined and personalized. From the time of booking to the actual "slow cruise" experience, quality and service are hallmarks of Costa neoCollection. Guests can consult a team of experts and personalize their cruise by booking shoreside tours that match their tastes and interests. Once onboard, a concierge assists guests in choosing from an array of shipboard and shoreside amenities, such as the newly introduced romantic candlelit gourmet "Dinner Under the Stars."

The neoCollection Itineraries
The Costa neoCollection kicks off with an extraordinary 62-day voyage sailing from Dubai Feb. 9, 2014. The "Grand Africa Tour" will visit the coastline of India, the islands of the Indian Ocean--the Seychelles, Maldives, Mauritius and Reunion -- then on to Madagascar, circumnavigating the African continent on a route taking in Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, St. Helena, Senegal, Cape Verde, the Canary Islands and Morocco, ending at Savona, Italy. The voyage can be booked as a complete trip from Dubai to Savona or, for those with less time, divided into segments from Dubai to Cape Town, South Africa, or Cape Town to Savona.

In spring/summer 2014 the Costa neoCollection will transform Mediterranean cruising when Costa neoRiviera sails a 12-day "Mediterranean Heart" slow-cruise vacation.

The "Mediterranean Heart" itinerary departs Savona April 11 and 22, May 3 and 25, Sept. 12 and Oct. 4. The cruises call at Toulon, France; Salerno and Livorno, Italy, a port ideally located for excursions to Pisa and Florence; Valletta, Malta; Porto Empedocle, Sicily, with unforgettable tours to the temples of the Valle dei Templi, and an overnight call at Barcelona, Spain. The May 3 departure also includes a visit to Genoa, Italy.

The "Mediterranean Spirit" itinerary from June 5 through Sept. 1 offers the epitome of a Mediterranean summer among the historically evocative islands of the region, as well as Italy’s Amalfi Coast. With Savona as homeport, Costa neoRiviera will call at Toulon; Propriano, Corsica; Olbia, Sardinia; Trapani, Sicily; Valletta; Capri and Salerno, Italy, and Portoferraio, Isle of Elba. The range of tours includes seaside trips to inimitable gems like Costa Smeralda, San Vito lo Capo, Positano, Amalfi, Portofino and the island of Favignana.

The Costa neoCollection also features one of the most popular itineraries for scenic cruising--northern Europe. Costa neoRomantica will offer 13- to 15-day summer cruises bound for Baltic cities and the majestic fjords of Norway.

On June 25 and Aug. 2 and 26, Costa neoRomantica sails from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on a 13-day "Northern Capitals" itinerary. After stopping at Bornholm, Denmark, Costa neoRomantica will call at Helsinki, Finland, and St. Petersburg, Russia, where guests will spend two days and one night exploring the historic imperial city. The ship then calls at Tallin, Estonia; Stockholm and Visby, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark.

Guests who want to admire the midnight sun can choose the 13-day "Kingdom of Light" itinerary on Costa neoRomantica departing June 1 and 13, July 21 and Aug. 14. The ship visits destinations where fjords and waterfalls dominate the stunning landscape.

Costa neoRomantica departs Amsterdam bound for Hellesylt and Geiranger, Norway, en route to what many consider to be Norway's most beautiful fjord. The next port is historic Trondheim, Norway, followed by the North Cape, continental Europe's northernmost point, where from May through July the Land of the Midnight Sun offers its most romantic natural spectacle. The cruise continues on to Tromso, Norway, the base for many polar expeditions. Expanded Voluntourism Excursions On Crystal's World Cruise To Help Travelers Help More

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 23: Crystal Cruises' guests and crew will have almost twice as many more opportunities to give back locally during 2014's World Cruise. With an expanded You Care, We Care program during Crystal Serenity's 89-day, LA to London global journey (departing January 18), volunteers can help underprivileged children, the eco-system, or a local memorial, in Hawaii, Asia, and/or Africa, with Crystal handling all costs and logistics. Typically, Crystal offers one complimentary voluntour per cruise, always aiding a small, local organization. However, the World Cruise's five segments next year boast seven unique excursions in seven ports. Assistance opportunities include:

-- Gardening and weeding Honolulu's Makapu'u Beach to help preserve dwindling native plant life.
-- Helping build structures and clean playgrounds at Father's Home Care Ministries' home for disadvantaged children in Takoradi, Ghana.
-- Reading to underprivileged children to improve literacy as part of Singapore's LIFE program (offered on two World Cruise segments).
-- Teaching, singing, gardening and playing with orphans in Sihanoukville, Cambodia;
-- Preparing meals, babysitting, or reading to the abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children of Baphumelele Children's Home near Cape Town, South Africa.

-- Engaging in the day-to-day programs (knitting, gardening, schoolwork, etc.) of the orphaned children raised and cared for by families in Durban, South Africa's SOS Children's Village.

"Our You Care, We Care participants have cherished connecting to the destinations in such an intimate, interactive, and compassionate way," says Thomas Mazloum, Crystal's executive vice president. "They love seeing facets of a culture not usually visited on a luxury vacation, and return to the ship feeling like they may have made a difference, however small or large. Just a few hours together can be incredibly informative, enriching, and so memorable, for both the recipients and those giving."

March 10's Singapore to Cape Town segment should prove to be especially appealing to the philanthropic-minded, with three different You Care, We Care opportunities during the 18-day voyage. Since launching in 2011, Crystal's You Care, We Care program has aided more than 50 in-need communities around the world, with new organizations constantly reviewed by the Land Programs team year-round. Some communities are visited just once a year, while others have been visited several times a season, and returned to the following year, building goodwill over multiple visits. Recent You Care, We Care excursions have included:

-- St. John, New Brunswick: Sorting donated clothing and serving food to refugees and other less fortunate at the Romero House community food kitchen.
-- Cartagena, Colombia: Aiding impoverished "barrio" villagers via the Granitos de Paz Foundation.
-- Barcelona: Helping protect endangered marine life at the CRAM Foundation for the Rehabilitation and Conservation of Marine Animals.

Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders Named Godmothers of Norwegian Getaway

MIAMI, Oct 17: Norwegian Cruise Line and the Miami Dolphins announced today that the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders will christen Miami’s ultimate ship, Norwegian Getaway, as the official Godmothers. The Christening Ceremony will take place on Feb 7, 2014 on board Norwegian Getaway, the largest ship to homeport year-round in Miami. The line also announced a partnership with the Miami Dolphins that designates Norwegian Cruise Line as the “Official Cruise Line” of the Miami Dolphins and Sun Life Stadium.

“Norwegian Getaway is Miami’s ultimate ship, so the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders are a great fit with our brand as they are excellent role models and global representatives of South Florida,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s president and CEO. “There’s no better match here in Miami than to have these outstanding women christen our new ship.”

The Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders have been a visible aspect of Dolphins football history since 1966. These internationally known ambassadors for South Florida diligently rehearse every week to bring spirit and excitement to every game day and community event appearance. An ethnically diverse group of glamorous women, the cheerleaders wholeheartedly encompass what it means to be both beauty and brains, as they are all also well-respected professionals in their community. The Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders, just as the team they represent, exemplify teamwork, performance, the pursuit of perfection and an unrivaled passion for football.

“We are honored to be selected by Norwegian to be the Godmothers of their newest ship, Norwegian Getaway. Norwegian Cruise Line is a first class organization and a well-known brand in our community, making this an ideal partnership,” said Emily Snow, director of the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders. “It is truly a privilege to be named as the Godmothers of Norwegian Getaway and we are anxiously awaiting the christening celebration.”

Norwegian Cruise Line is also partnering with the Miami Dolphins throughout the football season at Sun Life Stadium and is an official sponsor of the team. At each home game, ticket holders can picture how they would “Cruise Like a Norwegian” by having their photograph taken in front of a Norwegian Getaway backdrop and they can enter a sweepstakes to win a cruise for four on Norwegian Getaway. On-site ambassadors are available with information about Norwegian’s newest ship and overall fleet. During the Miami Dolphins “Salute to Service” in the third quarter at home games, a military hero is recognized with a cruise for two on Norwegian Getaway, courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line. Norwegian Cruise Line is also being promoted on the stadium television network for all events at Sun Life Stadium year-round, along with permanent signage under the scoreboard. The partnership also extends onboard Norwegian Getaway, as the ship’s library will house Miami Dolphins memorabilia highlighting the team’s rich history.

To celebrate the announcement of the Dolphins Cheerleaders as Godmothers of Norwegian Getaway, the cheerleaders will make an appearance at Norwegian Cruise Line’s photo area on the Grand Plaza (across from the Dolphins store at Gate G) at Sun Life Stadium on Sunday, October 20 from 11 am to 12 pm. Regal Princess to Debut Early: Two New Sailings Added

SANTA CLARITA, CS, Oct 17: Regal Princess will make her debut next year earlier than originally announced, and Princess Cruises has added two new sailings to her maiden schedule. The ship’s first voyage, which was previously scheduled for June 2, will now be May 20, 2014. Passengers can select from two new week-long Mediterranean cruises traveling between Venice and Athens.

The two new Regal Princess Mediterranean cruises are:

May 20, 2014 (New maiden voyage) – Seven-day cruise from Venice to Athens including stops in Corfu, Mykonos and an overnight call in Istanbul.

Both voyages can be combined into a 13-day Grand Adventure or added on to the previously announced June 2 cruise for a full 20-day Mediterranean escape. Throughout the summer, the new ship will sail on Princess’ signature Grand Mediterranean cruises, with two itinerary choices.

They have until Nov 15, 2013, to decide if they want to take the new cruise instead of, or in addition to, their existing reservation.

“The construction of Regal Princess has been progressing very well and we’re delighted the ship will be ready to welcome passengers even earlier than originally planned,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “We know that this beautiful new vessel will impress passengers just as much as her sister ship, Royal Princess, has this year.”

Regal Princess, a sister ship to Royal Princess, will offer its 3,560 passengers a variety of enticing features, including a soaring atrium, the social hub of the ship; a dramatic over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway extending more than 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel; plush private poolside cabanas; the Princess Live! television studio; a dedicated pastry shop; a special Chef’s Table Lumiere, a private dining experience that surrounds diners in a curtain of light; and balconies on all outside staterooms. Carnival Cruise Lines Simplifies Fare Structure

MIAMI, Oct 14: Carnival has simplified its fare structure by reducing the number of core fare options from six to three. The change is a result of travel agent and consumer feedback indicating that the line’s fare structure was too complicated and made it difficult to book with Carnival. The revised fare structure will become effective October 31 for all future sailings.

Moving forward, the core fare structure will be simplified to include three fares:

· Fun Select: This cruise option features a two category stateroom upgrade and guests choose their stateroom assignment. The fare is fully refundable before final payment, offering a premium and flexible choice for guests.
· Early Saver: Offers Carnival’s unique price protection guarantee and is the ideal fare for closing early business. This fare closes three months prior to sailing for cruises of 5-days or less and five months prior to sailing for cruises of 6-days or more. Guests choose their stateroom assignment with Early Saver. This fare includes a non-refundable deposit and $50 administrative fee for changes to the reservation.
· Super Saver: Generally opens when Early Saver closes. The deposit is non-refundable and the stateroom is assigned by Carnival. Super Saver is a good selection for close-in travelers.

The Fun Select Plus, Easy Saver, and Instant Saver fare code options will no longer be offered as part of the simplification. Qualifying fares such as past guest, resident and military as well as special promotional fares will continue to be available.

“Based on input from our travel agents, we modified the core fare structure to include those fare codes that offered the customer value and choice,” said Brenda Yester, senior vice president of revenue management for Carnival Cruise Lines. “By offering three fare choices instead of six, it simplifies the decision-making process and makes the overall sales experience easier for our travel professionals and their clients.”

Many travel professionals have supported the pricing simplification project. “We want to thank our travel professionals who gave us invaluable input through our quarterly travel agent survey, focus groups and Carnival Conversations. Their feedback has helped us tremendously in finalizing this new structure,” said Joni Rein, vice president of worldwide sales for Carnival Cruise Lines. Carnival continues to gather travel agent feedback on its group program and will share updates in the coming weeks.

New to the program next year will be new guest chef-prepared Vintage Room dinners on each of the four sailings--in Asia, the South Pacific, Trans-Atlantic, and the U.S./Caribbean--as well as a new microbrew theme on the last of the voyages.

Held on both Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, the cruises will feature local tastes of:

-- The South Pacific: Sailing Jan 20 from Papeete to Bora Bora, Rarotonga, Tonga, Fiji, and Auckland (overnight).

-- The U.S. East Coast, South, and Caribbean: Sailing Nov 5 from New York (overnight) to Baltimore, Norfolk, Charleston, Turks & Caicos, Curaçao, Aruba, and Miami.

While exact programming details are still being finalized, food experts scheduled thus far include Thrainn Freyr Vigfusson, recent Icelandic Chef of the Year and Bocuse d'Or finalist; Stephen Beaumont, co-author of The World Atlas of Beer; Aldo Sohm, Wine Director at New York's Le Bernadin restaurant and the first-ever representative from America to win "Best Sommelier in the World"; Shailesh Naidu, the only native five-star executive chef in Fiji; and Serge Dansereau, Australian celebrity chef, fresh food movement pioneer, and owner of the iconic Bathers' Pavilion restaurant in New South Wales.

Extraordinary culinary experiences are a hallmark of every Crystal vacation. Crystal's extensive, innovative choices for dining include the ultra-luxury line's coveted cheese and wine cellars, overseen by onboard sommeliers (Court of Master Sommeliers-certified); fresh, chef-like cocktails served by certified mixologists; and gourmet dining options at every meal, whether in the Crystal Dining Room, at afternoon tea, or in Nobu and Piero Selvaggio's specialty restaurants. National Symphony Orchestra to Perform on Queen Mary 2 for Fifth Time

Oct 4: Cunard is pleased to announce that the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) will return to perform aboard Queen Mary 2 on her Sept 8–15, 2014 Transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York. This will be the fifth time the NSO has travelled on Queen Mary 2 in what is fast becoming a highlight in the Cunard year.

The Orchestra performed on a Transatlantic crossing aboard the Cunard flagship just last month under the watchful eye of celebrated Grammy®-nominated British conductor Anthony Inglis. Anthony has performed more times at the Royal Albert Hall than any other conductor and played a key role in the naming ceremonies of each of the three ships that make up the Cunard fleet today.

During the recent crossing, over 150 passengers volunteered to take part in two choirs under Anthony’s direction, rehearsing regularly and then participating in two on board concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra.

During these “Last Night of the Cunard Proms” concerts, outstanding performances which achieved an approval rating of 99.6 in the passenger Comment Forms, two guest conductors stepped up to take the baton from Anthony Inglis at key moments: Queen Mary 2’s Master, Captain Kevin Oprey, and passenger Lord (Mervyn) King, formerly the Governor of the Bank of England. Footage of the guest conductors with the NSO and choirs can be seen in the
4 minute video clip.

“Each time we travel on Queen Mary 2 we raise the roof in the Royal Court Theatre,” said Anthony Inglis. “The Orchestra and I are still on a high from last month’s sailing and we are counting down the months to September 2014 and our fifth appearance on board Queen Mary 2, the greatest ship in the world, in her tenth anniversary year!”

MIAMI, Oct 3: Strike up the marching band, New Orleans! Carnival Cruise Lines, New Orleans’ most popular cruise line, and local television station WDSU-TV have launched a search to find the most spirited high school marching band in the Big Easy. “The Battle of the High School Marching Bands” competition celebrates local spirit and skill, and will ultimately award the winning band a $10,000 cash prize from Carnival and chance to perform aboard Carnival Sunshine, the line’s latest ship to call New Orleans home when it arrives there for its North American debut this November.

Area schools have three weeks to record a three-minute video of their band performing their school fight song. A special judging panel will select the top five finalists.

Beginning on Oct 22, the five finalists will be posted to the WDSU-TV website wdsu.com/carnival-cruise-lines for schools, families and members of the community to get in on the musical fun and rally around their favorite band. Voting will run through Friday, Nov 1. Fans can vote once per day for the duration of the voting period.

The winning band will be announced in November and receive $10,000 for their school’s music program courtesy of Carnival Cruise Lines, along with the opportunity to perform aboard Carnival Sunshine during its U.S. debut celebration at the Port of New Orleans on Sunday, Nov 17. Each of the four additional band finalists will receive a $1,000 cash prize from Carnival.

“As we prepare for the U.S. arrival of Carnival Sunshine to New Orleans, we want to do something truly special to celebrate that is in the spirit of New Orleans and its rich music history,” said Jim Berra, Carnival’s chief marketing officer. “This contest provides an opportunity for us to help foster musical development in the next generation of talented performing artists and is a great way to partner with the community to celebrate the November arrival of Carnival Sunshine,” Berra added.

Beginning Nov 18, 2013, the 3006-passenger Carnival Sunshine will offer 7-day cruises to the Bahamas and the Western Caribbean from New Orleans. Holland America Line to Acquire McKinley Chalets Hotel in Denali National Park

SEATTLE, Oct. 2: Holland America Line, through its subsidiary Holland America-Princess Alaska, has reached an agreement in principle to acquire the McKinley Chalets Hotel in Denali National Park from Aramark Sports and Entertainment Services. Holland America Line will develop the property further for inclusion on its Land+Sea Journeys that combine an Alaska cruise with an overland tour to Denali National Park. Details of the McKinley Chalets Hotel purchase agreement and plans for future enhancements are ongoing, and once the purchase is completed later this fall, more information will be made available to the public.

The agreement to purchase McKinley Chalets Hotel is part of an enhancement program that also will see modifications to Holland America Line's Alaska hotels at Fairbanks, Skagway, and Whitehorse. The renovations, which will take place over the next few years, will include extensive room updates and upgrades to soft goods and hotel decor.

"Acquiring the McKinley Chalets Hotel provides Holland America Line with great potential for growth in Denali and enables us to expand the appeal of our brand as a leader in Alaska travel," said Stein Kruse, president and CEO of Holland America Line. "This purchase will help us deliver the finest destination resort and experience in Alaska at the highlight on Land+Sea Journeys -- Denali National Park."

Spanning more than 42 acres, the McKinley Chalet Resort features 345 rooms, fine and casual dining, an on-site dinner theater, on-site raft departures and walking trails on the Nenana River. Holland America currently owns 26 acres adjacent to the chalets, including 135 additional guest rooms that have been operated by Aramark as part of the McKinley Chalets. Total rooms are 480.

Land+Sea Journeys Bring Fresh Approach to Alaska Experience: In 2014, Holland America Line is rebranding its popular Alaska CruiseTour program with the new name Land+Sea Journeys. Now with more time in the marquee destinations and less overland travel time, Holland America Line guests will have more opportunities than ever to explore and personalize their Great Land vacations.

With 12 options ranging in length from 10 to 20 days and featuring a three- to seven-day cruise, Land+Sea Journeys offer the benefit of combining the "must-see" of Denali National Park with the "seldom seen" wonders of the Yukon. Among the most significant program enhancements for 2014 is a convenient one-hour flight that brings Fairbanks, Alaska, and Dawson City, Yukon closer together, replacing up to two days of motorcoach travel and a hotel overnight. Other notable elements include revised departures for the McKinley Explorer dome rail schedule between Anchorage and Denali to maximize guest time in both locations. For travel between Denali and Fairbanks, luxury motorcoaches will be introduced to also increase guest time in both Fairbanks and Denali.

Guests on Costa neoRiviera will be able to go in small groups of 25 or fewer on excursions that are exclusive to this itinerary.

The range of shore excursions is diverse and alluring: at Muscat guests can partake in a tour of Oman with a visit to Nizwa Fort, dune bashing in Wahiba Sands and an overnight stay in a Bedouin tented camp. From Abu Dhabi, guests can soak up the sun during a day at the beach at the private Al Maya Island Resort or take part in the unforgettable experience of a night spent under the desert sky, witnessing an incredible dawn while enjoying breakfast at an Arabian village. In Dubai guests can visit the royal stables and see a traditional Arabian horse show.

Costa neoRiviera's program for the winter 2013-14 season in the U.A.E. is complemented by Costa Fortuna, which will be deployed there from Dec. 20, 2013, through March 21, 2014. Costa Fortuna will sail weeklong roundtrip cruises from Dubai with calls at Muscat (overnight) and Kashab, Oman, and Abu Dhabi. For additional information, visit costacruises.com

Viva Miami! Norwegian Getaway to Debut South Florida-Themed Restaurants, Bars

MIAMI, Oct 1: Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship set to debut in January, will feature several restaurants and bars that evoke the tropical feel of Miami and South Florida. The Tropicana Room, Flamingo Bar & Grill, Sunset Bar and Sugarcane Bar will be new and unique additions to the largest ship to homeport in Miami year-round.

“Norwegian Getaway is Miami’s ultimate ship, so her unique venues celebrate the heritage and culture of Miami and South Florida,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s CEO. “With these themed venues, we want all of our guests to experience a taste of Miami with food and drinks that reflect what the city is known for.”

The Tropicana Room, a complimentary restaurant on Deck 7 aft, is inspired by the glitz and glamour of the Miami Beach night life of the 1940s and 50s. Rich woods, dark purple and silver fabrics and mirrored columns, along with nostalgic photos from Miami Beach in her heyday, will make guests feel as if they are dining in a retro supper club. Featured menu items will represent the flavor of Miami with several Latin-inspired choices, including ceviche (ceviche de camarón), churrasco steak (churrasco con chimichurri) and chicken with yellow rice (arroz con pollo).

The Flamingo Bar & Grill, a complimentary restaurant on Deck 16, will serve food with a Latin flair throughout the day. An extensive menu is offered, including traditional favorites like pulled pork (pierna asada); steak chimichurri (bistec con chimichurri); fried yucca (yuca frita); spinach empanadas (empanadas de espinaca); and guava turnovers (pastelitos de guyaba). Desserts include caramel custard (flan de leche); rice pudding (arroz con leche) and three milks cake (tres leches). A variety of regional drinks and Cuban coffee will be available to complement the meal.

Sugarcane Mojito Bar will serve mojitos and rum-based cocktails from an island-themed setting on Deck 8 with both indoor and outdoor spaces. The bronze bar features banana leaves made of bronze relief which also circle the dual columns. The atmosphere is tropical and relaxed with leather and rattan furniture.

The Sunset Bar on Deck 8 takes its inspiration from Ernest Hemingway’s Key West, with design elements that are eclectic, masculine and adventurous. A large Marlin mounted behind the bar serves as the space’s focal point, while leather furniture and animal prints round out the décor in this eclectic lounge. Drinks include a Hemingway-inspired daiquiri, Key Largo’s Secret Chest, which includes Bacardi Superior rum infused with mixed herbs, sweet vermouth, Campari and fresh orange and lemon juice, topped with sparkling wine. Just next to the Sunset Bar is the Humidor Cigar Lounge offering a range of cigars for purchase.

For those who prefer self-service, Norwegian Getaway will feature the wine dispensers first introduced on Norwegian Breakaway. Located in the Garden Café and Studio Lounge, each dispenser offers a selection of four wines. Guests can sample a taste or a full glass. Prices range from $2.75 to $13 per glass, depending on the wine.

Throughout the ship, guests will find murals and artwork inspired by her tropical homeport. On the Waterfront, there will be a collage of the flora, fauna and architecture of Key West and the Southernmost point, along with the signature Miami skyline. On Deck 18, murals will highlight the famous lifeguard houses of Miami Beach and other elements of South Beach.

For fans of hull artist David “LEBO” Le Batard, they can find his paintings showcased in the atrium café and reception area, with works that include several large original pieces of art. The Art Gallery will also feature a collection of his paintings for sale.

Norwegian Getaway is Miami’s ultimate ship and will embody the essence of her tropical hometown with hull artwork by Miami’s own David "LEBO” LeBatard, which features a whimsical mermaid holding the sun above the waves.

Featuring groundbreaking entertainment, the ship is the first to feature the GRAMMY® Experience at sea, which will include artifacts chosen and curated by the GRAMMY Museum® along with live performances by past GRAMMY winners and nominees, among others.

Another first of its kind at sea, The Illusionarium is an all-new dining and entertainment experience that will envelop guests in the fascinating world of magic, inviting them to experience the astonishing illusions of world-class magicians and supernatural special effects. In addition, Norwegian Getaway boasts sizzling Latin-inspired dance productions by Broadway sensation, Burn the Floor; performances of the seven-time Tony Award nominated musical LEGALLY BLONDE; hilarious comedy headliners produced by Levity Entertainment Group; and the sing along fun of the dueling pianos of Howl at the Moon. To cap off a spectacular cruise experience, every sailing will feature a dazzling fireworks show at sea, set to music, as part of a dance party in the ship’s outdoor club, Spice H20.

Similar to sister ship Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway will dazzle guests with the excitement of 678 Ocean Place and The Waterfront, a variety of interconnected indoor and outdoor venues on three dynamic decks that creates a multiplex of dining, activities and more and enhances guests’ connection with the ocean. Norwegian Getaway will also feature Miami’s coolest place to chill out – the ship’s SVEDKA/Inniskillin Ice Bar, featuring Art Deco-style décor, reminiscent of Miami Beach’s famous Ocean Drive.

Foodies setting sail from Miami on Norwegian Getaway can feast in their choice of 27 incredible dining options, including Celebrity Chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian’s three dining concepts: Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian; Ocean Blue on the Waterfront and The Raw Bar. Buddy Valastro, star of the popular TLC series “Cake Boss” also has an outpost of his famous Carlo’s Bakery onboard, serving up delicious treats like cannolis lobster tails and specialty cakes.

For families, Nickelodeon®, the number-one entertainment brand for kids, is on board and includes a variety of exciting interactive experiences, along with the opportunity to meet SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, Dora the Explorer and Diego, among other favorites. Norwegian Getaway will also include an all new pirate-themed Nickelodeon Kids’ Aqua Park where children can cool off with colorful, whimsical and larger than life Nickelodeon characters from Bikini Bottom.

The three-story Sports Complex will feature the Aqua Park with five thrilling water slides, two swimming pools and one of the largest multi-level elevated ropes course that will challenge guests to more than 40 different elements, including a zip track. For a thrill like no other, guests will confront The Plank, a platform that extends eight feet over the side of the ship. A nine-hole miniature golf course is located beneath the ropes course, offering family fun with friendly competition. A rock climbing wall, bungee trampoline and spider web, a 24-foot enclosed climbing cage complete with a spiral slide, round out the activities.

Norwegian Getaway offers a variety of flexible accommodations ranging from Studio staterooms specially designed for solo travelers, to balcony and family staterooms and opulent suites in The Haven, the ultimate in luxury accommodations. The move will keep Viking Star in the Mediterranean, offering additional sailings to some of Europe's most beautiful and historic cities, from Rome to Barcelona. Responding to the overwhelming demand for Viking Star's maiden voyages in the Mediterranean offered earlier for the spring and summer of 2015, the new winter cruises will allow guests to explore the vibrant cultures and sites along the Mediterranean in the quiet season, in keeping with Viking's promise to provide guests with a unique cruise experience. Stops include Monte Carlo, Toulon and Corsica in France; Tuscany and Sardinia in Italy; Tunis, Tunisia and Valencia, Spain; plus off-the-beaten path visits to Valletta, Malta and Algiers, Algeria.

Viking's Ocean Cruises
In May 2013, Viking Cruises announced the launch of its ocean cruise product line, which will begin sailing in May 2015 with the brand-new Viking Star embarking her maiden voyages in Scandinavia and the Baltic; and then she will also sail in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. The launch affirmed Viking Cruises' continued commitment to providing unique cruising journeys for the experienced traveler. Viking's ocean cruises offer a small-ship experience via an intimate, custom-designed vessel that allows travelers to get closer than ever to their destinations. As well, the line offers itineraries highlighting history, art and culture while giving maximized time in port, privileged-access excursions and onboard experiences that truly immerse guests in the local culture. Since announcing itineraries for the 2015 Viking Star maiden voyages, cabins have sold at a rapid rate, due to overwhelming interest in Viking's small-ship, destination-focused ocean cruises.
