CLIA CEO Testifies Before U.S. House Subcommittee on Cruise Industry's
Strong Commitment to Safety
WASHINGTON, DC, Feb 29: Christine Duffy, President and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), will testify today on behalf of the cruise industry before the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. The hearing titled “A Review of Cruise Ship Safety and Lessons Learned from the Costa Concordia Accident” will review the Concordia incident and explore the safety and security practices of the cruise ship industry.
In addressing the Concordia incident of Jan 13, Duffy will state that, "The Concordia has had a profound impact on our industry. I speak for all our cruise line members in expressing our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy. As an industry, we are wholly committed to examining what happened, and to identifying lessons that can be learned. If it becomes clear that corrective measures are necessary, we will work as an industry with governments and regulators to ensure recommended measures are adopted. Safety is the cruise industry’s number one priority and there is nothing that is more important to our industry.”
Immediately following the grounding of the Concordia, CLIA member cruise lines launched a Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review – a comprehensive assessment of the critical human factors and operational aspects of maritime safety. The Review, which is well underway, is comprised of four key components:
• First, an internal review by CLIA members of their own operational safety practices and procedures covering issues of navigation, evacuation, emergency training, and related practices and procedures.
• Second, consultation on these issues with independent external experts.
• Third, the identification and sharing of industry best practices and policies, as well as possible recommendations to the IMO for substantive regulatory changes to further improve the industry’s operational safety.
• Fourth, a commitment to collaborate with the IMO, governments, and regulatory bodies to implement any necessary changes – but also to act independently and voluntarily where possible to speed safety improvements.
Duffy’s testimony will highlight how the industry is already moving forward with initial recommendations from the Review, including a new muster drill policy announced on February 9 that exceeds existing legal requirements by providing that musters – or mandatory briefings for passengers on emergency procedures – be conducted prior to a ship leaving port.
“CLIA will continue to lead the Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review and, as with the recently agreed muster policy, will look to apply lessons learned so that future incidents, however rare, can be avoided,” Duffy will assure the Subcommittee Members. “We remain fully and deeply committed to continuous enhancement of the safety of our guests and crew members, as it is without question our top priority.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces “Deal or No Deal” Interactive Game Show
MIAMI, Feb 28: Norwegian Cruise Line is introducing the hit game show “Deal or No Deal” to its fleet of Freestyle Cruising® ships. The line has partnered with TimePlay, a world leader in multi-player interactive technology and content, to bring this highly interactive and fun game show to the high seas. The popular show challenges contestants to play and deal for prizes in a high-energy contest of nerves, instincts and raw intuition. “Deal or No Deal” is currently offered twice per cruise on all Norwegian ships (except Pride of America).
Based on the successful television format that has aired in more than 50 countries, the on-board rendition uses content from the show and allows everyone in the audience to participate in real time to win prizes, playing along with the randomly selected contestant who has the chance to win cash. True to the television series, players will be confronted with sealed briefcases full of varying prize values. Without knowing the prize value inside, the contestant has to decide whether to keep the case until it’s unsealed at the end of the game. The pressure mounts in each round and after a pre-determined number of cases are opened, the participant is tempted by the mysterious “Banker" to accept an offer in exchange for what might be contained in the contestant's chosen briefcase in which they will have to decide whether to make a deal or exclaim, “No deal!”
For a chance to beat the banker and win exciting prizes, guests participate as a randomly selected contestant or play along as an audience member for $19.95 per person. Audience prizes range from a seven-day cruise to cash and on board prizes. Guests should consult the ship’s Freestyle Daily once onboard for exact times and locations.
Norwegian offers guests a wide variety of entertainment options on board its fleet of Freestyle Cruising ships from production shows and Nickelodeon family programming to the line’s signature White Hot Party and the first bowling alleys at sea. Guests can also take in acts like Blue Man Group, Cirque Dreams® & Dinner, Legends in Concert, The Second City and Howl at the Moon on board the line’s newest ship, Norwegian Epic. To book a cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line, contact a travel professional, call Norwegian at 888-NCL-CRUISE (625-2784) or visit ncl.com.

American Cruise Lines Mark Twain Tribute Cruise
GUILFORD, CT, Feb 23: American Cruise Lines, the leader in small ship cruising, announced today the offering of a Mark Twain tribute cruise aboard the brand new authentic paddlewheeler, Queen of the Mississippi. The cruise will honor the famous American author and humorist often referred to as the “Father of American Literature.” Virtually synonymous with the life along the Mississippi River, his experiences are immortalized in his famous writings including Life on the Mississippi (1883), Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885).
Available on the September 15th seven-night /eight-day St. Louis roundtrip, American Cruise Lines will celebrate Twain’s life and works. During his career, Mark Twain spent several years as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. This cruise will take guests along the River in the same way that Mark Twain would have seen it, and will highlight many of the most important places and events in his life.
Planned stops include an extended visit to his childhood hometown in Hannibal, Missouri. Additional features of this tribute cruise include:
• Mark Twain Impersonator & Entertainer
• Exclusive tour of Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum
• Onboard display of a First Edition copy of Life on the Mississippi
• Guided trolley ride throughout Hannibal
• Guest Gift: Special edition copies of Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
• Honorary dinner and cocktail reception
“What better way to celebrate Mark Twain than aboard Queen of the Mississippi and on the river that played such a large role in his life and literary contributions,” said Timothy Beebe, Vice President of American Cruise Lines. “Cruising aboard Queen of the Mississippi is a historic experience on its own. This tribute cruise heightens that experience and reinforces our efforts to provide enriching cruises for our passengers.”
With this cruise, American Cruise Lines aims to provide an unforgettable journey back in time with history and adventure at every bend in the river. It will capture the spirit of Twain’s own ideals: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do,” Twain wrote. “Explore. Dream. Discover.”
The Queen of the Mississippi carries 150 guests in spacious staterooms, many of which are twice the size of those on any other Mississippi riverboat. Staterooms feature large private balconies with sliding glass doors and all of the amenities today’s travelers expect, while maintaining the elegance of classic late 1800s Mississippi riverboats. American Cruise Lines will operate the authentic paddlewheeler over the entire Mississippi River System, including the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers. The Queen of the Mississippi will also be able to travel at significantly higher speeds than all other Mississippi riverboats, minimizing night travel and making more itineraries possible with longer visits to the river towns. A number of unique riverboat journeys are planned that take passengers as far north as St. Paul, MN on the Mississippi River and as far east as Pittsburgh, PA on the Ohio River. Cunard Announces Details of Weddings Program
Feb 22: While Cunard ships have long served as a romantic backdrop to love stories across the globe, couples will soon be able to say "I do" during a luxury cruise aboard the most famous ocean liners in the world, for the first time in the Line's 172-year history. Beginning in April 2012, guests will be able to celebrate an unforgettable wedding day at sea, conducted by the Captain, aboard Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria.
Only Cunard offers the truly unique option of saying “I do” mid-Atlantic on a classic trans-Atlantic Crossing aboard the grandest ocean liner in the world, Queen Mary 2. This is the first time in Cunard’s history that it will be possible to marry on board, and demand is already high.
Couples wishing to wed at sea can choose from the full spectrum of Cunard’s worldwide voyages lasting seven nights or more and departing after April 2012. In addition to Crossings, destinations include the Mediterranean and Scandinavia, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, the Far East and Australia.
To maintain exclusivity, only one wedding will be arranged per day, at either 11:00 a.m. or 3:30 p.m., and the ceremonies will take place on days at sea. With a dedicated on board wedding coordinator, the bride and groom will find that all of their wedding needs can be met, from hairdressing, make-up and manicures in the spa, to the wedding ceremony itself, as well as photography and video, and the reception afterwards. In addition, weddings can be tailored with Cunard's “Finishing Touches” to reflect individual requests and preferences, from an accompaniment by the ship’s own harpist, to a beautiful ice sculpture.
“There is nothing quite as special as the setting of a Cunard ship,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line. “Saying ‘I do’ at sea aboard Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth or Queen Victoria promises so much more than a land-based venue. With a backdrop of the world’s most exotic coastlines in the Mediterranean and across the world, or the extraordinary sense of timelessness that you only experience mid-Atlantic, a Cunard wedding promises the happy couple a ceremony of classic style and sumptuous luxury.” Shanks continued, “And the ships are so much more than simply a setting for the ceremony itself – they are also honeymoon destinations, offering newlyweds a fresh view to wake up to each morning and a trousseau of unforgettable destinations to discover together ashore.”
Choosing to marry on one of the three largest Cunard ships ever built creates an exceptional setting for any style of celebration. Various venues are available aboard each ship depending on the size of the wedding party, from elegant lounges to award-winning restaurants, including The Verandah on Queen Elizabeth and Todd English on Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. Under the guidance of Cunard’s global culinary ambassador, Chef Patron Jean-Marie Zimmermann, the ships’ world-class culinary teams will prepare wedding canapés, a delicious wedding lunch or an exquisite wedding dinner.
Cunard has created a Wedding Package, with a tempting array of optional extras, to meet all requirements. The main package includes the ceremony conducted by the Captain, traditional wedding music, a White Star Bellman escorting the bride, floral arrangements, Veuve Clicquot Champagne and, of course, the wedding cake as well as priority check-in and luggage delivery. A never-to-be-forgotten day is available for $2,500 plus a marriage license fee of $575. An array of Cunard's “Finishing Touches” are also available for purchase and include items such as a Bride and Groom’s Champagne and Caviar Breakfast in Bed, or a three-tiered fruit cake. Crystal Cruises Bookends Sailings With More Stationary Overnights
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17: As Crystal Cruises prepares to segue to "All-Inclusive" starting next month, the ultra-luxe line has also been transforming in another big way: to a focus on significantly more local shipboard overnights at the beginning of cruises. For the upcoming European season, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony have doubled the number of voyages that begin with days (and nights) in port. The move eases the worry of late flight arrivals, lost luggage, relocating to/from hotels, finding quality eateries, and settling in prior to sight-seeing, while also enhancing recreational choices due to the more extensive options available on board Crystal's ships than can be found at hotels on land.
"By adding more overnights to the cruises, especially at embarkation, travelers only have to unpack once, yet get even more time to experience a culture, while still having their Crystal home as a luxurious base," explains President Gregg Michel. "They also begin meeting the people who will be sharing their time aboard--the staff and other travelers who will become their Crystal family by vacation's end--all the sooner."
Crystal has also added overnights to the middle and/or end of the majority of cruises this year. Overnights at the disembarkation ports of Venice, Barcelona or Istanbul, for example, further allow guests to see significantly more of the final destination without having to move to a hotel or rush to the airport to fly home. Twenty-six large cultural capitals and smaller locales renowned for their charm are featured in North America, the Pacific, and Europe from March through December, with 69 overnights planned in alluring Europe alone. A sampling includes:
-- MEDITERRANEAN, including the BLACK SEA and MIDDLE EAST (43 overnights/10 ports): Venice, Ashdod, Istanbul, Odessa, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Monte Carlo
-- BALTIC and NORTHERN EUROPE: (21 overnights/4 ports): Stockholm, Copenhagen, and St. Petersburg, with five cruises featuring two nights ("double overnight") in the latter
-- WESTERN EUROPE and UK (5 overnights/4 ports): Edinburgh, Bordeaux, and Reykjavik
-- NORTH AMERICA: (9 overnights/4 ports): NY, Quebec City, San Francisco, and Montreal
-- SOUTH PACIFIC, AUSTRALIA, AND NEW ZEALAND: (6 overnights/4 ports): Papeete, Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney, with a huge complimentary VIP New Year's Eve celebration during a double overnight in the latter.
Crystal's new strategic planning evolution will extend through 2013 into 2014, with more than 85% of next year's 64 itineraries offering two or more days in port, and a more than 50% increase in overnights on embarkation day.
The renowned Crystal Experience has been rated "World's Best" more than any other cruise line, hotel, or resort in history. For more information and Crystal reservations, contact a travel agent, call 888-799-4625, or visit crystalcruises.com.

SeaDream Yacht Club Adds Paddleboards to Their Collection of Complimentary Water Toys
Feb 16: Stand up paddle surfing (SUP) or stand up paddle boarding is an emerging global sport, particularly popular in warm coastal climates and resorts. Now SeaDream I and SeaDream II have two, full volume boards for entry to expert riders. These new boards (Amundson 11’.6”) are the biggest all around SUP boards, handling up to 250 pounds. At 30” wide, with a relatively straight outline, they are very stable and track well with speed. A little bit of tail rocker means you can take it in the surf too.
Stand up paddle surfing is fast becoming a popular water surf activity because it allows a wide range of athletic types to get involved. The main benefit of the sport is that SUP provides the participant with a strong 'core' workout. Its Hawaiian heritage is said to have originated from surf instructors standing up on their boards to better see their students and the incoming swell. Unlike surfing, stand up paddle boarding is very easy to learn. Within one hour you can become comfortable in the water and on your board. Also unlike surfing, SUP surfers don’t need to worry about high and low tides. (Note: SeaDream I now has two SUP boards and SeaDream II receives her two boards on March 31, 2012.)

Celebrity Cruises Uncorks Full-bodied Onboard Wine Program
MIAMI, Feb. 15: The exploration of wine, guided by knowledgeable sommeliers, is a hallmark of Celebrity Cruises' modern luxury vacation experience. Now, Celebrity has expanded its wine program to illuminate an even more full-bodied slate of offerings representing the world's most robust wine-producing regions, offering vacationers the opportunity to taste and learn about more wine than ever before. The updated program presents a comprehensive selection of wines from diverse regions and grape varietals, and a variety of price points. With an aim of delivering an intuitive tasting experience for guests who purchase wines by the bottle or by the glass, wine lists are now categorized by flavor rather than grape varietal or geographic region.
"Our guests have told us how much they enjoy the wine experience on our ships, from participating in tastings led by our highly trained sommeliers to the convenience of our wine packages, to simply sipping a glass of wine while gazing out at sea," said Scott Steenrod, Associate Vice President, Food and Beverage Operations. "The updated, now globally focused program exemplifies modern luxury, with offerings from more wine-producing regions than before, a new emphasis on the many nuances of flavor that make wines unique, and a variety of convenient pricing and packaging options."
Celebrity's evolved wine program introduces more than 100 new selections of wines by the bottle, including 20 additional new half-bottle selections. As a result, the award-winning Solstice Class fleet offers over 500 different wines, and its Millennium Class ships, currently undergoing a revitalization program known as "Solsticizing," offer over 300, as does Celebrity Century.
The program now expands beyond the previous emphasis on wines from Italy, France and California, to include more wines from South America, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Portugal and South Africa. When Celebrity's ships are in wine-producing areas such as Australia and South America, guests will now have more opportunities to select locally produced wines and more deeply immerse themselves in the flavors and experiences of a destination.
In the ships' main restaurants as well as in "Blu," the specialty restaurant for AquaClass guests, wines are listed by flavor profile, identifying primary flavor characteristics so that guests can make selections based on what matters most: taste. A new "Reserve List" within the main restaurant wine list identifies some of the finest sparkling, red, white and dessert wines from Celebrity's specialty restaurants. Prior to the wine program being updated, these selections were offered only in Celebrity's specialty restaurants; their popularity there led to Celebrity now making them available in the main restaurants. In various bars, restaurants and lounges throughout its ships, Celebrity offers a list of wines available by the glass. As part of the program expansion, this list has grown from 25 to 38 selections, with 60% of the wines by the glass being new wines for Celebrity.
Celebrity's in-house sommelier and beverage programming expert, Chanelle Duarte, developed the enhancements to Celebrity's main restaurant wine list, carefully changing out over 100 wines in order to add depth and relevance to the program. Duarte has worked with Celebrity since 2007, and has contributed to the development and launch of numerous unique beverage offerings, including the Enomatic wine preservation and dispensing system, among others.
"Chanelle's creativity and knowledge have been integral to the evolution of our beverage program, and the updated wine program is another example of her ability to elevate our already exceptional offerings to even greater heights," Steenrod said.
Celebrity's beverage packages that include wine also have been updated to mirror changes to the overall wine program. The "Taste of the Vineyards" three-, five- and seven-bottle wine packages that were previously available on the Millennium Class ships and Celebrity Century have also been introduced on Celebrity's Solstice Class ships, and 90% of the wines that guests can choose from to create their packages are new wines for Celebrity. The introduction of so many additional choices adds many wines that offer both high quality and great value, while incorporating international varietals and regions. Celebrity's "Classic Beverage Package" and "Premium Beverage Package," both of which include wines by the glass in addition to beer and spirits, now include more choices of wine varietals. Over 80% of Celebrity's wines available by the glass are part of the Premium Beverage Package.
Celebrity engaged wine educator Brian Connors to develop a comprehensive wine education program for its sommeliers, bar staff and restaurant staff. Dubbed "Celebrity Cruises Wine University at Sea," the program provides up to 24 hours of training with multiple levels of knowledge advancement based on the participants' position. Celebrity's Cellarmasters and future Cellarmasters complete the full training. The training focuses on wine fundamentals, including viticulture, wine making and food and wine pairing; regional knowledge, including terroir, regional wine laws and unique characteristics of the world's wine-producing regions; tasting skills; storytelling, which helps sommeliers bring wines to life by painting a picture of its producer, grape varietal, region or even the origin of its label; and future trends.
"We are constantly tweaking and revising our training program to make it better and more relevant to the changes in the wine market," Steenrod said. "Our training program is on par with what organizations such as the Society of Wine Educators, the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, and the Guild of Sommeliers offer. Brian delivers an engaging, interactive training program that has truly resonated with our crew, and, in turn, has made our guest experience even richer. What really takes our wine program from being just a list of names on a menu to being a truly interactive experience is one of the world's largest teams of highly knowledgeable sommeliers in the world."
Having trained for his Sommelier certification at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, California, Connors has extensive experience including certification by the Court of Master Sommelier, a certification through the Society of Wine Educators, a position as a wine educator at Johnson & Wales University's College of Hospitality Management, and experience lecturing at many of the country's top schools, including Cornell University, the Culinary Institute of America, Florida State University and more.
Guests on Celebrity's ships also have the opportunity to experience wine tastings and food-and-wine pairing events, including the first Riedel comparative wine crystal workshops at sea, as part of the line's Celebrity Life activities program. Also revealed today were more details about the ship’s atrium and its vibrant collection of always-changing quick bites and light meals, beverages, entertainment, shopping and guest services. And the stunning Bar Piazza will feature an exclusive twin tea tower with over 300 tea and infusion combinations.
The line also released a preview video with Princess Cruises President and CEO Alan Buckelew and Executive Vice President Rai Caluori offering a glimpse of the new atrium that can be viewed at princess.com/royalprincess.
“Many features aboard the new Royal Princess will be exciting evolutions of the popular and successful features found throughout our fleet, and the atrium is no exception,” added Swartz. “The expansion in size of this space provided us an opportunity to add some brand new venues to what is already a favorite passenger area.”

Survey Says: A Cruise Vacation Heats Up Romance For Couples
MIAMI, Feb 10: For couples looking to rekindle the spark in their romance, the sea is calling with a million ways to fall in love again. According to a recent survey commissioned by Royal Caribbean International*, most Americans (90%) astoundingly ranked sex as the top activity on their cruise itinerary. Respondents also consider cruises to be the most romantic type of vacation while offering a better value for their dollar (84%). More than four out of five respondents also say that a cruise with their partner is more romantic than a land-based vacation, with a whopping 98% opting for an exotic cruise – to Bermuda or Europe, perhaps – as a special way to celebrate a special moment or occasion, such as Valentine’s Day or an anniversary.
Royal Caribbean offers an endless array of options for keeping the passion alive. With 22 innovative ships, calling on more than 270 destinations in 72 countries across six continents, there is something for every couple – whether they envision a romantic epicurean experience with their significant other, exploring a port of call or simply sharing an intimate moment in the privacy of their stateroom. Based on the survey results, other reasons why couples should consider a cruise vacation with Royal Caribbean include:
Love Liner: The vast majority of survey respondents say they left their last cruise feeling more “connected” with their partner (80%), being more in love with their partner (67%) and feeling more attracted to their partner (65%). Royal Caribbean can supply the ship, all you need is your mate.
Relationship Rx: Is it possible to cruise your way to a better relationship? Perhaps. Nearly three-quarters of respondents say that spending time with their significant other on their most recent cruise improved their relationship.
Port of Love: Respondents indicated that they are more likely to enjoy a number of romantic activities on a cruise than on a land-based vacation, including watching the sunset (72%), strolling in the moonlight (58%), stargazing (56%) and sharing a romantic dinner à deux (55%).
The Motion of the Ocean: Half of the respondents say they are more likely to be intimate on a cruise than on a land-based vacation. And not only is sex more frequent on a cruise vacation, but many (62%) report that the sex on their last cruise was better than normal. Perhaps not surprisingly, night time is the right time, or most popular time of day to be amorous on a cruise (31%), while 28% prefer any time of day–morning, noon or night.
Nautical Naughtiness: 24% cite their balcony as the place onboard where they would most like to be intimate, other than their stateroom, of course, and 58% are more likely to pack lingerie or sexy underwear for a cruise than a land-based vacation. For an astounding 90%, sex ranks as the top activity on their cruise itinerary, ahead of sitting by the pool (84%), enjoying nightlife options (83%) and shopping (70%).
For a limited time, there is one more reason why Royal Caribbean should rank high as a vacation choice for couples. During the “Month of Love,” lovebirds who book a cruise to Bermuda or Europe by Feb. 29 will receive a free “Romance Package” onboard–including roses, chocolate covered strawberries and sparkling wine. Ships visiting Bermuda stay overnight in port, so couples can enjoy one-of-a-kind experiences like sunset glass-bottom boat tours and snorkeling by moonlight. For guests booking a European cruise, no other part of the world has more memorable moments for two such as visits to legendary landmarks, gorgeous coastlines and charming towns. Royal Caribbean offers more than 100 itineraries for every romantic possibility.
Royal Caribbean has been committed to answering the call of the sea for the past 40 years, sailing every major sea in the world. With its history of creativity and innovation–delivering many at-sea industry firsts such as ice rinks, rock-climbing walls, zip lines, surfing simulators and Broadway shows–the cruise line continues to strive to deliver to guests an unforgettable and rejuvenating experience that appeals to vacationers of all ages.
Royal Caribbean provides a world-class vacation experience with a wide range of signature onboard amenities, entertainment and award-winning family programming. The cruise line has a 40-year history of giving guests the Royal Advantage – the most innovative cruise ships, exciting itineraries to popular destinations and world-renowned friendly and engaging Gold Anchor Service. For additional information or to make reservations, call your travel agent, visit RoyalCaribbean.com or call (800) ROYAL-CARIBBEAN.
* Survey Methodology: This survey was conducted online between Jan. 27th and Feb. 1st, 2012, among a national probability sample of 1,000 adults 18 years of age or older who live in the continental United States. Half the sample was respondents who have previously taken a cruise, and the other half was respondents who have not taken a cruise but are interested in taking a future cruise. All respondents indicated that they are currently in a relationship (either married or dating).

Cruise Industry Associations Adopt New Muster Drill Policy
London, Feb 9: The global cruise industry today announced a new emergency drill policy requiring mandatory muster for embarking passengers prior to departure from port. The new policy follows the industry’s announcement on Jan 27, 2012 of a Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review in response to the Concordia incident and as part of the industry’s continuous efforts to review and improve safety measures. The Cruise Lines International Association, European Cruise Council, and the Passenger Shipping Association put forward the new policy with the support of their member cruise lines.
The new muster policy, which has been voluntarily initiated by the associations’ members and is effective immediately, exceeds existing legal requirements by calling for the mandatory muster of all embarking passengers prior to departure from port. On rare occasions when passengers arrive after the muster has been completed, passengers will be promptly provided with individual or group safety briefings that meet the requirements for musters applicable under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The formal policy is designed to help ensure that any mandatory musters or briefings are conducted for the benefit of all newly embarked passengers at the earliest practical opportunity.
Musters are mandatory exercises conducted on cruise ships to ensure passengers are informed of safety protocols while onboard the ship, including emergency evacuation procedures. Current legal requirements for conducting a muster of passengers can be found in SOLAS and mandate that a muster occur within 24 hours of passenger embarkation.
The Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review includes a comprehensive assessment of the critical human factors and operational aspects of maritime safety. As best practices are identified, they will be shared among cruise industry association members and any appropriate recommendations will be shared with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), European Union and other governmental authorities as appropriate. The industry’s efforts also are consistent with the framework and spirit of the International Safety Management Code. Recommendations resulting from the Review will be made on an ongoing basis.

A Cunard Royal Rendezvous to Salute Her Majesty The Queen &
Celebrate Her Diamond Jubilee
Feb9: Cunard Line will celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a unique Cunard Royal Rendezvous on June 5, 2012, the final day of the Jubilee celebrations. Her Majesty has long been associated with Cunard, being the only person to have attended the naming of all three Cunard Elizabeths, beginning in 1938. This will be the first time that the three ships of the Cunard fleet, the three largest Cunarders ever built, will have been seen arriving and departing together in formation at their home port of Southampton.
“Cunard is delighted to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in a way that will give everyone, especially our guests, a truly remarkable day that they will feel proud to talk about for years to come,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line. “We are thrilled to take part in such an historic occasion, marking the sixty glorious years of Her Majesty’s reign in a fitting, memorable and spectacular way,” Shanks continued.
Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, and Queen Mary 2 will approach the port soon after first light on Tuesday 5 June, sailing in single file up the Solent River, with a flotilla of small boats expected to welcome them in. As Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria tie up at their berths, Queen Mary 2 will follow on, passing each ship in turn, with crew lining the foredeck of all three vessels, and the ships’ whistles sounding in salute of Her Majesty’s Jubilee.
Events will be happening throughout the day, to create both an outstanding guest experience and a fitting commemoration of Her Majesty’s reign. The celebrations will culminate in an evening spectacular where all three ships will be brought within close proximity of each other, and a fusillade of fireworks and special effects will light up the evening sky beyond them.
Queen Mary 2 will then lead Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria in single file down the Solent as all three ships set out on their celebratory Jubilee voyages. Further details of the day’s events will be released in due course.

MIAMI, Feb. 8: From Riedel comparative wine glass workshops to cooking competitions, from Rosetta Stone language lessons to iPhoto classes, from wellness workshops to pool volleyball with the ship's officers, the popular Celebrity Life activity program offers a multitude of ways to enjoy a modern luxury experience on every Celebrity Cruises vacation. This year, the premium cruise brand is making its already rich Celebrity Life lineup even more robust on its transatlantic sailings and calling it "Celebrity Life Plus," amplifying the "Taste," "Learn," "Revive" and "Play" themes known for exciting and entertaining vacationers year-round.
"Experienced cruisers know that transatlantic cruises offer an ideal opportunity to spend luxurious days at sea learning new things, exploring new tastes, recharging, or simply having fun," said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Senior Vice President, Hotel Operations, Celebrity Cruises. "The introduction of Celebrity Life Plus takes everything our guests already love about these sailings and about Celebrity Life and marries the two, resulting in the most comprehensive, enriching, exciting and fun long cruises, offering incredible speakers and other exclusive activities. Never before have we had such a wide array of offerings and activities on one sailing."
In a single transatlantic cruise, Celebrity Life Plus will offer cruisers as much immersion as a theme cruise, but while actual theme cruises focus on one area of interest, Celebrity Life Plus offers a robust breadth of activities focused on multiple themes.
Vacationers who wish to explore their love of food and wine will revel in the opportunity to hear from guest chefs and wine educators, who will present cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, book signings, food-and-wine pairing dinners and more, on each transatlantic cruise.
Those who wish to sharpen their mind will take pleasure in learning from dynamic speakers from Smithsonian Journeys, the program known for often unrivaled expertise that provides Celebrity's destination lectures on many of its regular cruises throughout the year. Astronomy experts David Hughes and Steve Maran will be onboard select sailings, as will art history expert Allison Jessing and Mark Kaufman, an expert in the burgeoning science of life beyond Earth.
Additionally, former Olympic gold medalist Frank Shorter and Hall of Fame professional basketball player Nancy Lieberman will share their experiences in the world of sports.
Additional special interest speakers will include naturalists, oceanographers and guest artists. The first of these will be the first at-sea appearance by the renowned palette knife artist Graham Denison, a master of contemporary impressionism whose work has been prominently featured by The Walt Disney Company and other leading consumer brands. Denison will be on the first 2012 spring transatlantic sailing painting live in a studio setting, offering guests an interactive class and hosting question-and-answer sessions. Guests with an interest in bringing out their own inner artist can participate in additional interactive classes led by master artists from Miami Beach's ArtCenter/South Florida. Classes will include jewelry making, mosaics, drawing, Chinese brush painting and watercolor.
Vacationers who wish to use their time onboard to focus on their wellness will enjoy Celebrity Life's special fitness programming; Celebrity will introduce the popular Latin and internationally inspired dance-fitness class "Zumba Fitness" into its Celebrity Life Plus line-up. Celebrity Life Plus will offer two classes a day, led by Zumba instructors who are part of the "Zumba Instructor Network(TM)" and who hold licenses to teach specialty Zumba classes - Zumba Gold (for the active older adult) and Aqua Zumba, which Zumba calls "the ultimate pool party."

For Valentine’s Day, Norwegian Celebrates Romance at Sea
MIAMI, Feb 8: This Valentine’s Day, Norwegian Cruise Line is celebrating romance at sea by surprising a very special couple, Erin Picard and Todd O’Neil of Peabody, Mass., who fell in love on board Norwegian Spirit in 2010, with a dream honeymoon following their wedding this summer.
In 2010, Erin Picard was going through a very difficult time. She had just endured an extremely painful breakup and was caring for a sick grandparent, all while working tirelessly at three separate jobs as a registered nurse. Erin dedicated her life to making sure others were happy and comfortable, while silently she suffered through her own very emotional situations. To break free from it all, she and her best friend decided to take a cruise vacation on board Norwegian Spirit from Boston to Bermuda on Sept 10, 2010. Seven days after boarding Norwegian Spirit, Erin excitedly called her mother, Lee Bryant of New Hampshire, and exclaimed, “I met the man of her dreams on this cruise!”
Bryant recalls the phone call, “She went on to tell me how the accommodations were spectacular, and the food was amazing. She told me that the Norwegian staff was some of the nicest people she had ever met. She had had the time of her life and met her true love. Erin sounded more excited and happy than she had been her in a very long time.”
Coincidentally, it was one of Norwegian’s amazing team members that made this love connection happen. At the start of the cruise, O’Neil jokingly asked Bar Waiter Reynaldo “Rey” Atizado from the Philippines if he knew of any nice women on board. Rey, not skipping a beat, walked directly to Erin and her friend and introduced them to Todd and his friend, and that’s where their love story began.
Two years later, Picard is marrying O’Neil, the man of her dreams and the couple couldn’t be happier about it. To celebrate their incredible love story, Norwegian is sending Erin and Todd on a dream honeymoon to Europe on board Norwegian Spirit, the ship on which they met. They will visit five different countries, including Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Turkey on Norwegian Spirit’s unrivaled 12-Day Grand Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona to Venice, following their July 6, 2012 nuptials.
“We are so excited to be going back on board the ship where we met and to visit such romantic destinations in Europe,” said Picard. “We wouldn’t have been able to take a honeymoon right now, so we are so thankful and thrilled.”
For others looking to find love on the high seas, Norwegian offers cruises to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Panama Canal and more on board 11 Freestyle Cruising ships. Guests who make a new cruise reservation from now through March 31, 2012 on any of Norwegian’s sailings will receive up to a 4-category upgrade fleet-wide, reduced deposits and electronic e-coupons with on-board savings of up to $400. Between Feb 14 and Feb 17, 2012, as part of Norwegian’s DASH sale, guests will also receive up to a $250 on board credit, based on stateroom category booked.
For those sailing with their sweetheart, there are many ways to spoil your special someone on board. From Romantic dinners in Norwegian’s signature French restaurant, Le Bistro, to a night of dancing in any of Norwegian’s many bars and lounges, to intimate couples’ massages in one of the line’s relaxing spas, there is no better place to celebrate love than on board a Norwegian cruise.
Romance Packages to Fall in Love With
Norwegian takes the stress out of planning the perfect Valentine’s Day celebration with two romance packages to choose from including:

Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth Receives Regal Welcome in San Francisco
Feb 5: Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth was greeted by hundreds of fans during her inaugural visit to San Francisco yesterday. Coming from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on her 2012 World Cruise, her stop in the City by the Bay marked her first and only maiden call to the U.S. this year. The youngest of Cunard’s renowned fleet, the newest Queen’s arrival was celebrated during a traditional maritime ceremony aboard, during which port officials and dignitaries exchanged decorative plaques with Captain Christopher Wells to commemorate the momentous visit. Local executives welcomed the ship.
“Today marks a very special visit for Queen Elizabeth,” said Captain Christopher Wells. “This is the Queen’s only U.S. maiden call, and given Cunard’s storied history with San Francisco, we are pleased that now, our entire modern fleet has called on this treasured port.”
The city of San Francisco has long held historical significance for Cunard ships since 1942, when the original Queen Elizabeth visited as part of her war duties, and where she also underwent a refit. Later, in 1978, Queen Elizabeth 2 made her maiden call there, visiting a dozen times more in subsequent years. Five years ago, flagship Queen Mary 2 was enthusiastically received by hundreds who came out to welcome her during her 2007 inaugural visit; and Queen Victoria was also graciously embraced by the city during her 2010 maiden call.
Named by Her Majesty The Queen in Southampton, England, in October 2010, Queen Elizabeth is the second largest Cunarder ever built, after Queen Mary 2. Statement: Costa Crociere’s Removal Plan for Costa Concordia
HOLLYWOOD, FL, Feb 2: Immediately following the Costa Concordia accident Costa Crociere started working to ensure the least possible environmental impact to the waters surrounding Isola del Giglio and to safeguard the island’s business activities and tourism. From the outset the measures drawn up by the company have been shared with and approved by the relevant Italian authorities in the spirit of full, transparent and total cooperation.
Costa has engaged leading international salvage experts Smit Salvage BV to remove the fuel contained in Costa Concordia’s tanks, and has presented a plan to remove other materials and potential pollutants to begin as soon as weather conditions permit. Costa Cruises also is working with the utmost speed on a plan to remove the ship itself — a top priority to protect the environment of Giglio and the island’s tourism industry.
The company has formed a technical committee with representatives from Costa Cruises, Carnival Corporation & plc, Fincantieri shipyard, Italian registry RINA and sector experts, including academics, who will collaborate with the relevant authorities to create a plan.
As articulated in a letter to Costa Concordia Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli, Costa Cruises has invited 10 companies to present proposals for the removal of Costa Concordia’s hull.
The invitation to bid was sent to the world’s leading salvage companies that are capable of performing the work in the shortest time, while ensuring maximum safety and minimum environmental impact. They include:
• Donjon Marine Inc.
• Fukada Salvage & Marine Works Co. Ltd.
• Mammoet Salvage BV
• Nippon Salvage Co Ltd.
• Resolve Marine Group Inc.
• Smit Salvage BV
• Svitzer Salvage BV
• T-and-T Marine Salvage Inc.
• Titan Salvage
• Tito Neri S.r.l.
Proposals must be presented to Costa Cruises by the beginning of March 2012. The plans will be assessed jointly with the Civil Protection Scientific Committee and a selection is expected to be made by the end of March. That timeline represents the best possible outcome, although given the complexity of the operation, there could be delays.

Norwegian’s New Youth Programs
The line’s current program, Norwegian’s Kid’s Crew in place since 1999, is being redefined to better address the skills and interests of children.
